TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
January 16, 1969
r--
PRESENT Chmn Barnes, Mr Gaughan, Mr Lord, Mr Belcastro, Mr Broderick,
Mrs Reed and Mrs Hall
GENERAL
The committee welcomed back Jim Broderick who is fulfilling Mr Lewis'
unexpired term The committee also officially accepted Mr Sperduto's resig-
nation with regret His replacement is to be named in the near future
The committee received a letter from the Lexington Minute Men asking for
$500 00 for their Patriots Day expenses Since this committee is working on
the same budget as last year's, and because the request did not reach us before
our budget was submitted as requested, the Minute Men will again be allowed
$400 00 rather than the $500 00
MEMORIAL DAY
Since the committee has not heard from the Legion as to a Speaker of the
Day for Memorial Day 1969, Mr Broderick will ask Captain Leahy (Navy) of
Lexington to perform that duty He will report his results to the committee at
the next meeting Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 26th this year
PATRIOTS DAY
Mrs Litchfield has the committee's okay to invite most of last year's bands
and marching units to participate in our parade on April 21st this year She
has already invited the military to march
Mrs Litchfield will invite the Linn Village Drum Band to perform on our
Green on Sunday, April 20th at 2 30 PM in conjunction with a Lexington High
School Band Concert and Song Fest Mr Lord will speak with Mr Gillespie con-
cerning the High School Band's participation Mrs Litchfield will ask Linn
Village to send appropriate publicity matter to Mrs Reed of our committee
Mrs Reed and Mrs Hall will ask the Past Chief Marshals of Lexington's
Patriots Day parades to meet with our committee next Thursday evening The
committee read a letter from Past Chief Marshal Corydon Wyman listing his
suggestions for improvement in future parades We also had a letter of complaint
from a Mrs Baxter about a truck serving coffee and being parked near the Green
during the morning parade This truck evidently made too much noise and was dis-
tracting from the parade This complaint will be referred to the Selectmen
The parade Theme for 1969's parade is A TIME TO REMEMBER Other theme
suggestions were Deference--Not Indifference--To Our Country's Flag Who More
Than Self Their Country Loved The Traditions We Must Uphold The Invitation List
was gone over and approved
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn Hall , Recording Secretary

TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
January 23, 1969
PRESENT Chman Barnes, Mrs Litchfield, Mr Lord, Mr Broderick, Mrs Reed
and Mrs Hall
VISITORS William Brenchick and William Bongiorno, Past Chief Marshals
PATRIOTS DAY Mr Bongiorno suggested updating the communications system
during the afternoon parade using Scouts as Aides-to-Aides as usual , and
also using Walkie-Talkies which should carry easily over a mile or more
Mr Corydon Wyman, last year's Chief Marshal , suggested in a letter
that the Spirit of '76 be at the head of the parade, which would place
the Spirit behind the motorcade He also suggests that all buses use
Follen Road rather than Massachusetts Avenue, as they create a traffic
problem The drivers of these buses should be people who will not be
participating in the parade itself in order for them to drive their
buses away from the parade formation area and not have to return in some
other manner
The Town of Arlington will celebrate Patriots Day on April 21st
The First Naval District, Fort Devens, and the Coast Guard have sent
forms to be filled out prior to their parade participation
The Linn Village Drum Band is on vacation at this time They will
let the committee know their answer to our request for their performance
on Sunday, April 20th, sometime after February 18th
The Annunciators Drum & Bugle Corps from Cambridge will be alloted
$150 00 and invited to participate in the afternoon parade

Massachusetts to participate in our afternoon parade She will also
invite the Salem Rockettes to participate
