HomeMy WebLinkAbout1969-01-16-TCC-min.pdf 7 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE January 16, 1969 r-- PRESENT Chmn Barnes, Mr Gaughan, Mr Lord, Mr Belcastro, Mr Broderick, Mrs Reed and Mrs Hall GENERAL The committee welcomed back Jim Broderick who is fulfilling Mr Lewis' unexpired term The committee also officially accepted Mr Sperduto's resig- nation with regret His replacement is to be named in the near future The committee received a letter from the Lexington Minute Men asking for $500 00 for their Patriots Day expenses Since this committee is working on the same budget as last year's, and because the request did not reach us before our budget was submitted as requested, the Minute Men will again be allowed $400 00 rather than the $500 00 MEMORIAL DAY Since the committee has not heard from the Legion as to a Speaker of the Day for Memorial Day 1969, Mr Broderick will ask Captain Leahy (Navy) of Lexington to perform that duty He will report his results to the committee at the next meeting Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 26th this year PATRIOTS DAY Mrs Litchfield has the committee's okay to invite most of last year's bands and marching units to participate in our parade on April 21st this year She has already invited the military to march Mrs Litchfield will invite the Linn Village Drum Band to perform on our Green on Sunday, April 20th at 2 30 PM in conjunction with a Lexington High School Band Concert and Song Fest Mr Lord will speak with Mr Gillespie con- cerning the High School Band's participation Mrs Litchfield will ask Linn Village to send appropriate publicity matter to Mrs Reed of our committee Mrs Reed and Mrs Hall will ask the Past Chief Marshals of Lexington's Patriots Day parades to meet with our committee next Thursday evening The committee read a letter from Past Chief Marshal Corydon Wyman listing his suggestions for improvement in future parades We also had a letter of complaint from a Mrs Baxter about a truck serving coffee and being parked near the Green during the morning parade This truck evidently made too much noise and was dis- tracting from the parade This complaint will be referred to the Selectmen The parade Theme for 1969's parade is A TIME TO REMEMBER Other theme suggestions were Deference--Not Indifference--To Our Country's Flag Who More Than Self Their Country Loved The Traditions We Must Uphold The Invitation List was gone over and approved Respectfully submitted, Marilyn Hall , Recording Secretary 388 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE January 23, 1969 PRESENT Chman Barnes, Mrs Litchfield, Mr Lord, Mr Broderick, Mrs Reed and Mrs Hall VISITORS William Brenchick and William Bongiorno, Past Chief Marshals PATRIOTS DAY Mr Bongiorno suggested updating the communications system during the afternoon parade using Scouts as Aides-to-Aides as usual , and also using Walkie-Talkies which should carry easily over a mile or more Mr Corydon Wyman, last year's Chief Marshal , suggested in a letter that the Spirit of '76 be at the head of the parade, which would place the Spirit behind the motorcade He also suggests that all buses use Follen Road rather than Massachusetts Avenue, as they create a traffic problem The drivers of these buses should be people who will not be participating in the parade itself in order for them to drive their buses away from the parade formation area and not have to return in some other manner The Town of Arlington will celebrate Patriots Day on April 21st The First Naval District, Fort Devens, and the Coast Guard have sent forms to be filled out prior to their parade participation The Linn Village Drum Band is on vacation at this time They will let the committee know their answer to our request for their performance on Sunday, April 20th, sometime after February 18th The Annunciators Drum & Bugle Corps from Cambridge will be alloted $150 00 and invited to participate in the afternoon parade Mrs Hall will contact the Sheraton Motor Inn in Lexington and confirm a tentative reservation for the Patriots Day luncheon on Monday, April 21st A $3 00 luncheon price will be allowed Mrs Litchfield will invite the Precisionettes of the University of Massachusetts to participate in our afternoon parade She will also invite the Salem Rockettes to participate Mrs Reed and Mrs Hall will invite all Lexington Civic organizations to send representatives to our next meeting for Patriots Day planning Respectfully submitted, Marilyn L Hall Recording Secretary J
