TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
September 19, 1968
PRESENT Chmn Barnes, Vice Chmn Gaughan, Mrs Litchfield, Mr Lord,
Mrs Severance, Mr Belcastro, and Mr's Hall
VISITORS Mrs Judy Uhrig, League of Women Voters

UNITED NATIONS DAY Mr Ralph Hall , President of the Jaycees, called
Mrs Hall of this committee to say his club would again like to donate
a tree to a school in Lexington The Bowman School will be this year's
recipient of that tree Mrs Hall will ask Ralph Hall to contact
Principal Perkins and Mr Mazarrell of the Park Department to make the
necessary arrangements for the tree planting ceremony Mr Hall sug-
gested some of the historic sites in Lexington for future plantings,
when all schools in town have received trees
Mrs Uhrig reported the Rotary Club will be happy to award two trips
to New York and the United Nations as prizes for the Essay Contest
winners There will probably be an assembly at the High School for
the winners also The Essay Contest theme this year is "What is the
role of the United Nations in guaranteeing basic human rights? What
has the United Nations accomplished? What further could it accomplish?
This contest is for Juniors at the High School
Mrs Cooper of the League of Women Voters will again handle the Poster
Contest The Elks will donate the prizes This year, as last, there
will be three savings bonds awarded - one fifty dollar bond, and two
twenty-five dollar bonds The winning posters will be on display in
the Library during United Nations week. It was generally agreed that
publicity for all contest winners needs improvement Mr Barnes has
agreed to take pictures at the early morning program on the Green
Mr Lord will ask a Mr Barnes, Public Relations Director at the High
School , to remind all school principals to fly their United Nations
flags on and around United Nations Day
Mrs Hall will order fifty UN Day posters for display in the schools
and stores of Lexington
The Lions Club will forego donating a UN Flag this year, as we are one
flag donation ahead of the tree donation
VETERANS DAY Mrs Litchfield will ask the three veterans groups to
meet with this committee next Thursday evening She will call Mary
Farris at Hanscom and request the Jody Drill Team and a Marching Unit
for our parade She will also ask if there is an available speaker at
the Base for our program on the Green

Mrs Hall was asked to type the permanent minutes for the current year
in the town's Permanent Records Book
