HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968-03-14-TCC-min.pdf 3 51 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE March 14, 1968 PRESENT Chmn Barnes, Vice Chmn Gaughan, Mrs Litchfield, Mr Lord, Mr Belcastro, Mr Sperduto, Mr Lewis, and Mrs Hall VISITORS Mrs K S Stevens, League of Women Voters Mr Neil Cronin, Chamber of Commerce Miss Karen O'Keefe, 250 Grove Street, St Brigid's and Mr Chris Anschuetz, 26 Turning Mill Rd , Sacred Heart Church Youth PATRIOTS DAY Mr Sperduto went over the float instructions with those present Questions were answered and general information on floats passed out The fire alarm system in the building went off at 8 30 providing some excitement The following three dignitaries have accepted Senator Leverett Saltonstall Maj Gen & Mrs John B Bestic, Comdr , ESD , Hanscom Field Maj Gen Joseph M Ambrose, Adj Gen , Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and his Aide Mrs Ruth Moyle has agreed to again cater the reception following the parade Cary Hall has been reserved for the NORAD Band Concert on the evening of April 19th The Ennunciators Drum & Bugle Corps from Somerville will be marching in the afternoon parade The committee went over the new Check List Mrs Hall will ask Chief Marshal Wyman to be present at our March 28th meeting to announce his parade staff and the number and names of senior scouts who will act as runners for the afternoon parade Rev Allan King, Church of Our Redeemer will give the invocation at the Sunrise Service on the Green Rev Herbert R. Adams will deliver the benediction The latter is pastor at the Follen Church The next to last paragraph in last week's minutes (dated March 7th) should read "Article XV" The Town Celebrations Committee wrote the following letter to the Lexington Board of Selectmen (over) 352 The Honorable Board of Selectmen Town of Lexington Lexington, MASSACHUSETTS 02173 Gentlemen, Article XV of the General By-Laws of the Town of Lexington, adopted April 3, 1967, charges the Town Celebrations Committee with "planning and carrying out the proper observance of April 19th" The committee interprets this literally, and will continue to plan the celebration of April 19th, rather than "Patriots Day" as designated by recent legislation We will use this interpretation, unless directed otherwise by the Board of Selectmen The Town Celebrations Committee is unanimously opposed to celebrating April 19th on Mondays for the sake of weekend convenience This is not a State holiday, but rather a local and historical holiday We urge the Board of Selectmen to take all necessary action to bring about the repeal of the recent legislation, or the deletion of "Patriots Day" from the bill Respectfully, THE TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE Respectfully submitted, Marilyn L Hall Recording Secretary
