PATRIOTS DAY Mr Lord, Acting Chairman, welcomed the Youth Groups
representatives Most of these groups will participate only in the Sunrise
Parade, with the following possible exceptions
Demolay Boys will have a float and Drill Team in the afternoon
parade Hayden Twirlers and Fifers 8 Drummers will march in the afternoon
parade Prom-manaders will advise the committee soon as to whether or not
they will enter their usual Lady Lexington float The Boy Scouts will
attempt to add scouts from other towns to increase their numbers in the
afternoon parade
In the Sunrise Parade, all the representatives seemed familiar with the
mechanics The Pioneer Girls and Christian Service Brigade, both from
Grace Chapel , have asked to march together, preferably NOT near the
Demolay Boys, because of the latter's difference in cadence
The Campfire Girls' representative advised us they would not enter a float
this year
Mr Sperduto announced there would be a Pre-Float Meeting on Thursday
evening, February 15th Mr Sperduto will inform all interested groups
by mail
Mr Barnes arrived and took over the chairmanship of the meeting We next
met with the following
Chief Corr - Police Department
William Fitzgerald - Fire Commissioner
Jim Broderick - Marine Corps League
Jim Edgar - Lexington Minute Men
Herbert Miller - American Legion
Bernie Belcastro - Veterans of Foreign Wars
349
Chief Corr discouraged the use of Pleasant Street for parade lineup, because
of causing a traffic problem He assured the committee he would provide a
police escort for the dignitaries, committee members, selectmen, etc from the
Lexington Motor Inn to the beginning of the afternoon parade in East Lexington
He will also provide an escort for the ladies of the O;gnitaries, committee 1 1
members, selectmen, etc from the Inn to the reviewing stand in time for the
parade
Chief Corr strongly suggests having the Revere-Dawes ceremony (about IPM)
in front of the reviewing stand on Massachusetts Avenue That section of
the avenue could be blocked off easily to avoid the usual traffic jam
Chief Corr also suggested keeping the Sunrise Parade smaller, as its size
creates traffic problems
Commissioner Fitzgerald will again be in charge of the 5th Division in the
li afternoon parade He will try to control the number of engines in that
Division He advises us he still has his arm band from last year's parade
Mr Miller advised us the American Legion will again take care of the
elementary school children not belonging to a youth group They will collect
in the cemetery driveway next to the Muzzey Junior High School playing field,
and join the parade (Sunrise) at that point
Mr Barnes told Mr Miller the Legion will again be allowed $150 00 for their
luncheon The Legion will be allowed to have a car in the afternoon parade
for any non-marchers Also of note, Mr Miller advised us the Legion is
already in the process of finding a Speaker of the Day for Memorial Day, and
he will notify the committee of their results
Mr Barnes will call Mr Burrell , Civil Defense Director, to inquire of using
the CD horns, if needed to call off the Sunrise Parade
Mr Edgar of the Lexington Minutemen again asked if the Minute Men could lead
the afternoon parade Mrs Litchfield said she felt they were such a
colorful group, they would be sorely missed leading their own 3rd Division
That Division has become extremely popular, because of the work put into it by
the Lexington Minute Men The committee wholeheartedly concurred with Mrs
Litchfield's compliment paid to the Minute Men Mr Edgar thanked the committee
CORRESPONDENCE The Jody Drill Team from Hanscom Field has disbanded Norwich
University will have its band and drill team in the afternoon parade We have
had requests from the Sailing Masters of 1812 and the Dorchester Brigadiers Drum
8 Bugle Corps to march in the afternoon parade Mrs Litchfield will advise the
Sailing Masters of 1812 (at the suggestion of the Lexington Minute Men) of our
regret in net being able to invite them to participate this year
We will go over the Check List at next week's meeting - February 8th The Patriots
Day Luncheon will also be discussed
Respectfully submitted,
