HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968-02-01-TCC-min.pdf 141 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE February I , 1968 PRESENT Mrs Litchfield, Mrs ( Severance, Mr Lord, Mr Belcastro, Mr Sperduto, Mr Barnes, Mr Gaughan, and Mrs Hall VISITORS Col Richard F Zeoli , U S A (Ret ) - Chief of Staff George E Cooper, Boy Scouts Christopher Joyce, 66 Lexington St , Burlington (272-2633) - Demolay Mrs Forestine Cole (862-0114) - Pioneer Girls (47 Ledgelawn Ave ) Charles Durkin and Walter Johnson (862-7564) - Little League Alan 01Shaughnessey and George Doucette (33 Reed St ) - Columbian Squires Steve Bolster (30 Valley Rd , 862-6747) - Prom-manaders Mrs Norma Martis, 104 North St , - Campfire Girls Note Carian Stewart (862-1826) is in charge of the Christian Service Brigade from Grace Chapel , though not present at this meeting PATRIOTS DAY Mr Lord, Acting Chairman, welcomed the Youth Groups representatives Most of these groups will participate only in the Sunrise Parade, with the following possible exceptions Demolay Boys will have a float and Drill Team in the afternoon parade Hayden Twirlers and Fifers 8 Drummers will march in the afternoon parade Prom-manaders will advise the committee soon as to whether or not they will enter their usual Lady Lexington float The Boy Scouts will attempt to add scouts from other towns to increase their numbers in the afternoon parade In the Sunrise Parade, all the representatives seemed familiar with the mechanics The Pioneer Girls and Christian Service Brigade, both from Grace Chapel , have asked to march together, preferably NOT near the Demolay Boys, because of the latter's difference in cadence The Campfire Girls' representative advised us they would not enter a float this year Mr Sperduto announced there would be a Pre-Float Meeting on Thursday evening, February 15th Mr Sperduto will inform all interested groups by mail Mr Barnes arrived and took over the chairmanship of the meeting We next met with the following Chief Corr - Police Department William Fitzgerald - Fire Commissioner Jim Broderick - Marine Corps League Jim Edgar - Lexington Minute Men Herbert Miller - American Legion Bernie Belcastro - Veterans of Foreign Wars 349 Chief Corr discouraged the use of Pleasant Street for parade lineup, because of causing a traffic problem He assured the committee he would provide a police escort for the dignitaries, committee members, selectmen, etc from the Lexington Motor Inn to the beginning of the afternoon parade in East Lexington He will also provide an escort for the ladies of the O;gnitaries, committee 1 1 members, selectmen, etc from the Inn to the reviewing stand in time for the parade Chief Corr strongly suggests having the Revere-Dawes ceremony (about IPM) in front of the reviewing stand on Massachusetts Avenue That section of the avenue could be blocked off easily to avoid the usual traffic jam Chief Corr also suggested keeping the Sunrise Parade smaller, as its size creates traffic problems Commissioner Fitzgerald will again be in charge of the 5th Division in the li afternoon parade He will try to control the number of engines in that Division He advises us he still has his arm band from last year's parade Mr Miller advised us the American Legion will again take care of the elementary school children not belonging to a youth group They will collect in the cemetery driveway next to the Muzzey Junior High School playing field, and join the parade (Sunrise) at that point Mr Barnes told Mr Miller the Legion will again be allowed $150 00 for their luncheon The Legion will be allowed to have a car in the afternoon parade for any non-marchers Also of note, Mr Miller advised us the Legion is already in the process of finding a Speaker of the Day for Memorial Day, and he will notify the committee of their results Mr Barnes will call Mr Burrell , Civil Defense Director, to inquire of using the CD horns, if needed to call off the Sunrise Parade Mr Edgar of the Lexington Minutemen again asked if the Minute Men could lead the afternoon parade Mrs Litchfield said she felt they were such a colorful group, they would be sorely missed leading their own 3rd Division That Division has become extremely popular, because of the work put into it by the Lexington Minute Men The committee wholeheartedly concurred with Mrs Litchfield's compliment paid to the Minute Men Mr Edgar thanked the committee CORRESPONDENCE The Jody Drill Team from Hanscom Field has disbanded Norwich University will have its band and drill team in the afternoon parade We have had requests from the Sailing Masters of 1812 and the Dorchester Brigadiers Drum 8 Bugle Corps to march in the afternoon parade Mrs Litchfield will advise the Sailing Masters of 1812 (at the suggestion of the Lexington Minute Men) of our regret in net being able to invite them to participate this year We will go over the Check List at next week's meeting - February 8th The Patriots Day Luncheon will also be discussed Respectfully submitted, Marilyn L Hall Recording Secretary
