Alan Cooper, League of Women Voters Mrs. Arthur J. Pennell, League of Women Voters, and the new UN Day representative Mrs. Frick, League .of Women Voters Board member, in charge of Action in the Community Mr. Daniel Cantor, Rotary UNITED NATIONS DAY Mrs. Hall reported she contacted the Library. They would like a pester given them. They will have a UN Day exhibit in their outside display case, and will fly the UN flag in their lobby. Mrs. Hall contacted the World Affairs Council and asked that they send us fifty UN Day pesters for distribution throughout town. Mr. Arthur Douglas called to assure us that the Jaycees will again donate the tree to be planted at Maria Hastings School this year in honor of UN Day. Mrs. Pennell announced that the first prizes for the essay contest will be the chaperoned trips to New York. There will probably be no UN Day assembly in the High School, as there are not near enough seats in the auditorium to seat the-whole-student is-hopedr and-strongly-sa, that the winning essays will be printed in the Minute Man, and perhaps pictures of the winning students. The League will also push publicity and pictures for UN Day from now on until October 25th, and look into placing phamplets in the Library for all to read. The League may possibly sponsor a panel discussion program on the United Nations for this whole town to enjoy. If this comes about, it was suggested that the winners of the essay contest be properly feted during this program, as well as their being honored at the flag-raising ceremony on the Green en the morning of October 25th. The essay theme title is 1tThe United Nations As An Instrument For Changes' 202 Mr. Nick Waldron has been suggested to the League for picture publicity for the paper or any other publications. Prizes for the Poster Contest would be $50.00 and $25.00 Bonds given by the Elks. Mrs. Litchfield will notify the League, Rotary, Elks, and Jaycees of the Maria Hastings School program on UN Day, so that representatives might attend. Mr Paul Mazarrell of the Park Department has been notified of the UN Day ceremony on the Green. Mr. Lawrence Stone has agreed to be bugler at this ceremony. Mrs. Litchfield will notify the Selectmen of the Maria Hastings School program, so they might attend, as well as the Green ceremony. Mr Sperduto will check with his New York friend about a UN Day speaker, and the League would be asked to handle the pians, should a speaker become available. We received a very fine letter from Major General Otto Glasser telling us of his transfer, and thanking us for his April 19th invitations. Our hospitality was appreciated. GENERAL This committee seems to be in very good financial condition. We have yet to pay the Veterans Of Foreign Wars for their hosting costs on Memorial Day. We await their bill. We will send the Minute Men $125.00 toward their hosting costs on Patriots Day, saying we feel sure an additional sum will be forthcoming. Something must be done this year about completing the public address system, as it is inadequate at the moment. Our budget should be able to cover this expense. We must submit our 1966 budget by November 15th. It was suggested that the April 19th movies taken by the Hanscom men be shown at our first of the year (1966) meeting, when we have several visitors attending to plan for the coming April 19th feastivities These movies are on sound track and in color. The Corresponding Secretary is authorized to withdraw $50.00 for petty cash. U3 Incidentally, this committee is awaiting word free the Selectmen as to where the plaque, given us by the U. S. S. Lexington CV-2 Minute Man Club, is to be placed. It was presented to the Town on May 8th in a very fine ceremony at the Minute Man Statue. VETERANS DAT Mrs. Litchfield has been asked to invite the four Veterans groups in Lexington to attend next weekts meeting. Mrs. Litchfield will write Col. Passalles for a marching unit on Veterans Day. Also, she will write to Lt. Wolfe, of the Air Force, for a similar unit The parade will leave the Munroe School at 10.00 a.m. Assembly tine will be 9:45 a.m. Rosters will be sent to all participating units. This committee wants the Veterans groups to know it is behind then all the way. We mill supply extra bands for the parade if needed. Mrs. Litchfield will alert Lexington's participating Youth groups of Veterans Day and their part in the parade. In this list of groups are the Hayden Twirlers, Hayden Drummers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, and the High School Band. Mr. Healy will check with the Veterans groups in Lexington to see if they wish to march back to Cary Hall following the Green ceremonies on November 11th, and disperse from there. This plan was in effect last year. Mr. Healy suggested Col. O'Neil, the Marine Commandant at the Naval Yard, as a possible speaker for Veterans Day Respectfully submitted, Marilyn Hall Recording Secretary 204 I __
