TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
June 3, 1965
PRESENT Chairman Barnes, Mrs. Litchfield, Mr Broderick,
Mr. Sperduto, Mr. Healy, Mr. Gaughan, and Mrs. Hall.
VISITORS Mrs. J. Alan Cooper, League of Women Voters
Richard Blodgett, Lions Club
Neil Cronin, Memorial Day's Chief Marshal
Lincoln Cole, Chairman, Board of Selectmen
UNITED NATIONS DAY Mrs. Cooper announced that this year is to
be International Cooperation Year. This special title should
give the students more meat for the essay contest and poster
contest, both of which will be sponsored again by the League
of Women Voters. We expect that perhaps theā¢ Elks and Rotary
Clubs will again award appropriate prizes to the contest
winners.
It is generally agreed that the reading of the essays should.
take place at a High School assembly. It was suggested that
the prizes for these essays be awarded on the Green at the
United Nations program, and that the winning essays be
printed in the Minute Man paper.
Mr. Sperduto suggested looking into an appropriate speaker,
possibly from the UN, with accompanying entertainment also
from the UN, since speakers and entertainment groups are
available from the UN. Lexington might even combine With
one or two other towns to bring top grade people in for a
United Nations program, thus assuring a good audience.

the Lions Club gave to the town for the Green. He will also
check into giving the Lexington Academy of the Holy Family a
UN flag for its assembly hall, since there are approximately
one thousand children in attendance there. The Lions have
given UN flags to all other existing schools in Lexington.
Mr. Meade, from the Jaycees, said they would probably supply
the tree again for planting at a Lexington school.
Mrs Cooper and another League member will come to an early
Fall meeting to report any progress on United Nations Day plans.

MEMORIAL DAY Mr Lincoln Cole personally thanked; this committee
for a job well done on Memorial Day. Mr. Barnes, in turn,
thanked Neil Cronin, Chief Marshal for Memorial Day, for his
fine work.
Mr. Cronin read a very fine letter from George Foster's daughter,
thanking us for seeing to it that George was picked up and driven
in tht parade. He has marched in this parade for seventy odd
years, so it meant a lot to him to continue. this fine record.
Mrs Litchfield will send fifty dollar checks to the High School
Band and to the National Guard marching unit for their
participation in the Memorial Day parade.
MISCELLANEOUS Mr. Sperduto will have the Spirit of '76 costumes
cleaned and put in moth proof bags for storage. He will also
check into the condition of the drums, and give them to
Mr. Barnes next week.
The Town Celebration Committee's cookout will be held on June 10th
at 6.30 p.m. at Mrs. Hall's house.
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn Hall
