A letter from Philip C. Pearson, Jr. thanks us for. sending an

Westview Cemetery; and Father Christon will be, Munroe

We had a thank-you letter from the Jacy Collier Agency, on behalf
of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America, for the
loan of Lexington!s Spirit Of 176 costumes. Mr. Sperdute will
have the costumes for the committee soon.
UNITED NATIONS DAY October 24th falls on a Sunday this year.
We-tentatively plan a 7-a.m. flag-raising -ceremony -on T
Monday, the 25th.
The winning Seniors from the High School in the Essay Contest
need more recognition than delivering their essays on the Green
to a sparse gathering. It is thought best to have them given
at a High School assembly. It is important that there are
photographers there to cover this event.'
We will invite the Jaycees, Rotary, League of Women Voters,
Lions, and Elks to meet with us on June 3rd to begin plans for
United Nations Day. All interested town groups are cordially
invited.
Also at this meeting, Mr. Healy suggested we invite Mr Cronin
to meet with us so that he can express any problems arising from
the Memorial Day exercises.

Mr. Gaughan suggested possibly having the permanent raising of
the flag at sunset on Flag Day with a band concert following.
Bob Brown suggested we celebrate United Nations Day on
Saturday instead of Monday.
GENERAL Mrs. Severance will send to Admiral Fitch and
Rex Turcette, Regional Director of the U. S. S. Lexington
CV-2 Minute Man Club, pictures of the Wreath-laying
exercises held in May at the Minute Man statue.
FLAG DAY At this writing, Flag Day is in the hands of the
Elks, as usual. We on this committee are not involved to
any great extent, as yet We did suggest a band concert
following retreat time.
Allan Meade, from Jaycees, told about the bill which the
Jaycees initiated through Bradford Morse about the permanent
raising of the flag. It has passed the House and is in the
Senate for approval. A letter to the Jaycees from Ted Kennedy
assured thea of his support. The Jaycees would be responsible
for all major planning of the day for the permanent raising.
July 4th was suggested, a Sunday, with formal ceremonies on 1
the Green, and political and military dignitaries invited on t_
this important occasion.
1 Bob Brown stressed the importance of the day(permanent raising
of the flag) and felt 'Lexington should go all out. It was
suggested there be television coverage as well as local and
state coverage in the newspapers. '
The placing of a plaque on this day was one idea.
1 Mr. Kennedy seemed to think the bill-would. pass' the Senate.
At least, he would work toward that end.
In conclusion, we will write to the Board of Selectmen
suggesting Flag Day activities remain the same as in past
years.
We will also suggest that there be a separate day set aside for
the ceremonies of the permanent raising of the flag, with the
Jaycees doing the major planning of these ceremonies, since
they were the originators of the bill.
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn Hall
Recording Secretary
