HomeMy WebLinkAbout1965-05-13-TCC-min.pdf 189 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE May 13, 1965 PRESENT Chairman Barnes, Mr Gaughan, Mr. Sperduto, Mr. Healy, Mr Broderick, Mrs. Litchfield, Mrs. Severance, and Mrs Hall VISITORS Raymond Lewis, American Legion ' Neil Cronin, Memorial Day's Chief Marshal The committee received a thank-you letter from Col. and Mrs. Barrere -for their April 19th invitation and activities. A letter from Major Riley states that there will be a color guard and marching unit from the 26th Division, Massachusetts National Guard, on Memorial Day in our parade. Thi§ division is from the 3rd Battalion, 101st Artillery. Major Kent from Hanscom tells us that the E. S D. Jody Drill Team, consisting of twenty-eight airmen, will make its first appearance in any l©cal town on May 31st in our Lexington Memorial Day parade. We are delighted to be having them participate. A telephone call from Miss Keefe, principal of Maria Hastings School, tells us that the Elementary School Color Guard must decline marching on May 31st, but hopes to be participating in other parades. George Cooper will let us know how many Boy Scouts will be marching on the 31st of May. Mrs. Litchfield has been asked to invite the Selection and Clergy to participate on May 31st. Those clergy to be invited include Rev. Handley, Rabbi Bernet, Rev. Clark, Rev. Father Christen, Father McLeod, and a Curate from Sacred Hearb 'Parish. Mr Lincoln P Cole, Selectmen Chairman, will be asked to read the Governor's Proclamation on the Green at the end of the parade. Mr. Healy is to call Rev. Clark at Hancock Church as to the number of men to be at his May 30th service, and at what time they should form outside the church to march in as a group. Mr. Lewis estimated there would be about fifty men. The Marine Corps League will have its color guard there Mr Healy is to send out a notice of this church service to all participating groups, so that they are familiar with the particulars. 190 Mr. Lewis suggested that in future years, we invite the participating groups for the May 30th celebrations earlier in the year, as early, in fact, as March. Mr. Dioiammarino has been asked to give us the name of the High School student who will recite the ,Gettysburg Address at the Munroe Cemetery on May 31st. Mr. Rufus Mc Quiilan, the son of a Union Veteran, will be asked to take up Mr. Foster's duties, if Mr. Foster cannot be with us during Memorial Day weekend. Mrs. Litchfield will telephone the Lions Club, Rotary Club, and the Elks to invite them to march with us on May 31st It was agreed that the Spirit Of '76 should be used for April 19th activities, and not for all the other holidays that come along for our celebrating. Mr. DiGiammarino will contact Mr Gillespie at the High School about having the High School Band march on May 31st. Mrs Hall will contact Mrs Johnson at the Hayden Centre about having the Hayden Fifers & Drummers march on May 31st Mrs Litchfield will order two buses to take the veterans from Munroe School to Westview Cemetery and back on May 31st for services at the cemetery Mr. Cronin said there should be a member of the clergy accompanying these buses. The Police Department will be notified of all activity in Lexington on May 30th and May 31st by the Town Celebrations Committee. This committee will ask Rogee for two pieces of bunting to dress the speaker's platform on May 31st. The marching units in the May 31st parade will march from the Green to the parking lot in the rear of the Town Office Buildings, to be dismissed there for the American Legion's colation. Maurice and Mrs Healy will be representing the Town Celebrations Committee at the Minute Man Bali on May 15th at the new Armory A cookout is planned for this committee and spouses on June 10th at 60 Ledgelawn Avenue Mrs Hall will invite Selectman and Mrs Cole, and Mr. and Mrs. Fox to be our guests for the evening. More details will be forthcoming. 191 PLEASE NOTE Our regular meeting on Thursday evening, May 27th, will commence at 7 p.m. sharp! At next week's meeting, we will finish up the Memorial Day planned activities. We will begin plans for United Nations Day in the Fall. We will have more definite plans for the June 10th cookout. It was suggested we invite the April 19th parade staff to view our movies of the 1965 day sometime in mid—January of 1966. Mr Gaughan suggested we show these movies to the cookout gathering on June 10th Mr. Sperduto is in charge of procuring the costumes and drums of the Spirit Of +76, so that they can be put in storage for next year. Mrs Litchfield will write thank—you notes to the car dealers who generously gave the use of their cars on April 19th. Respectfully submitted, Marilyn Hall Recording Secretary A letter from the Board of Selectmen to this committee asks that we correlate some celebration plans for Flag Day on June 114th, if Congress approves the bill for the permanent raising of the flag. The Elks, Minute Men, and Jaycees would be involved in this celebration. { 192 I
