The Lexington schools will probably celebrate this holiday on Friday, October 23rd. This would stretch out the holiday activities over the weekend. Mrs. Cooper assured us the, League of Women Voters will sponser the Senior Class Essay Contest again this year. They have also suggested a Folk Song Contest and a Pester Contest for Grades 7 — 11. The. League would send out instructions to all schools involved for such a Poster Contest. The League cannot furnish womenpower. Therefore, we are looking for organizations to handle the Folk Song Contest and the Poster Contest, the latter, of, which would appear to be fairly simple. The Elks seem to want to do something in connection with U. N. Day. Therefore, Mr. Joseph Donnell, President, will be contacted through ,John Fiorentino. Mrs. Cooper will talk with Bix Shoemaker, President of Rotary, concerning the prizes to be awarded for the three contests It will be suggested that there be six — ten dollar prizes (in certificate form for books and or records) This means there would be two prizes per contest. Mr Barnes mentioned that the public might vote on the posters. Mrs. Cooper had, in addition, the following suggestions 1., A speaker to be at the High School prier to the Essay Contest to present a United Nations assembly Professor Paddleford was mentioned as a possible speaker. Mrs. Beardsley asked if Club 47 might not send someone out, also. 2. There might be held a Hootennanny, possibly at Cary Hall or the High School Gym, decorated with the posters from the Contest. 3. The Contests might be judged in the High School Auditorium. 1 116 4. That materials be distributed to all schools on UNICEF, in 9 conjunction with United Nations Day celebrations. The Boston UNICEF office has a movie that rents for $2.00. The League would handle the UNICEF program. Dr. Fobert wants displays in all Lexington schools. Use lots of posters. We usually spend about $35.00 on these posters. The principal at the Harrington School should be notified that we are thinking of that school for the annual tree-planting in connection with U. N Day. It would take place on Friday, October 23rd. The Lexington Press is looking for the Drum and Belfry cut. Mr Sperduto will speak to the Minuteman Freedom Committee (Mr. Parks or Dr. Smith) about this cut, and at the same time remind them of United Nations Day Perhaps they could re-activate their committee on a permanent basis, with possible participation in U. N Day feastivities Mrs. Litchfield read a letter from W R Greeley to our committee 1 suggesting we try to obtain Mr. Stevenson to speak here as part of U. N. Day feastivities. He should be invited right now, yet we cannot do this, since we don't know ourselves what our program is to be. The committee feels that past showings have not warranted such a personality. It was also brought out that Mr. Stevenson might well be very involved with the U. N. itself in New York at that time Mr. Kiedaisch assured us the Chamber of Commerce will handle the window display (s) in town. We will supply to the store (s) involved the material from the World Affairs Council. This material will not be available until mid-October. The display (s) needs to be on, Mass. Ave. Mr Kiedaisch will write to all merchants asking and finding out if they feel there should be only one display window, this display to be well done and appealing to the passerby, in preference to several displays done in a lesser manner. If they vote for one display, he will ask for window space, and if he finds none, he will donate his own (Lexington Ski & Sport Shop, Inc.). MEMORIAL DAY Rev. Handley has accepted our invitation to participate in the celebration, and he will be marching to the Green with us. Rev.. Bartlett will also be a part of the day's program. Mrs. Beardsley will contact Streeter Stuart on the day's publicity. Mrs. Litchfield will contact Mr. Medeiros of the Lions Club to make the necessary arrangements to have all available White Tricon Hat Recipients on the Green on May 30th. 117 The Linn Village Drum Band will not be coming here on May 30th, as we cannot use them. However, they made such a hit in Lexington, Mr. Barnes has asked Mrs Litchfield to invite them to participate in our April 19th celebration next year (1965). The dates would be April 18th and 19th. Ronald Kunz from our High School will give the Gettysburg Address. Mrs Litchfield will contact Frank DiGiammanrino about arranging to play a hymn at Munroe Cemetery and the National Anthem at the Green. Mr. Sperduto will call Douglas Maxner concerning the Spirit of '76's being in the Parade, and he will let Mrs. Beardsley and Mr. Healy know the results. Mr. Healy announced that notices have been sent out to all participating groups for the parade and the ceremonies. Mr. Healy will see to it that the wreaths get to the cemeteries and Green. Mr. Healy assured Mr. Cole he would have on his person a copy of the Proclamation for May 30th. Mr. Healy announced that the Marine Corps League will be the Firing Squad. Mrs Beardsley will contact Mrs. Osborne to organhe the five Girl Scouts willing to participate in the ceremonies. She will find out who is Head Scout in the group. Mrs. Beardsley was a bit chagrined to receive from Kevin White's office in Heston three Mothers' Day Proclamations in answer to her request for three Memorial Day Proclamations Respectfully submitted, Marilyn Hall Recording Secretary 118 r
