TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
April 16, 1964
PRESENT Chairman Barnes, Mr Gaughan, Mr. Fenske, Mrs. Litchfield,
Mr. Rudd, Mr. Sperduto, Mr. DiGiammarino, Mrs. Beardsley,

MEMORIAL DAY
The committee reviewed the program for May 30th with Mr. Healy.
Mr. Barnes willtsee what he can do about arranging for a church
to hold services in for that day. There will be a minimum of
thirty people attending.
The flags have been ordered, and Mr. Healy presented the bill to
the cimmittee.
The Veterans." organizations take care of decorating the graves- and
the ceremonies.
Mrs. Litchfield will invite Hanscom Field to send a color guard and
marching detail, and invite the Lexington National Guard to join the
parade, and will also write the Selectmen and Chief of Police.
Mrs. Beardsley will order Governor's proclamations from the
Secretary of Statds office for Selectman Chairman Lincoln Cole to read. •
A speaker for the day will be needed for the ceremonies at the
Battle Green.
The program has been set up as follows
8.45 — Assemble at Munroe School — local organizations only.
we must arrange to nave 1 buses there at 9:00 a.fa. <for
transportation to Westview Cemetery and return. No
band needed. Mrs. Litchfield will order the buses.
10:00 — March Massachusetts Avenue to Munroe Cemetery — Mr. Foster
will speak here, and a High School student will give the
Gettysburg Address. Three clergy will be needed for the
day — a Protestant Minister, Catholic Priest and a Rabbi.
Each will be assigned to a different stop.
They will proceed to Cary Hall, where the usual ceremony
will take place; placing the wreath, invocation by the
clergy, and taps.
10:45 — Move to Bedford Street at Buckman Tavern and Minute Man
Memorial. Then to the Colonial Cemetery with the same 1
procedure, including firing three volleys.

11.15 - Leave the Colonial Cemetery and move to the Monument
on the Green, following the same procedure
11 30 - Battle Green - Reading of Proclamation from the
Governor by Selectman Cole, brief comments by the
Speaker of the day. Call to colors, and raising
the flag to full staff. Star Spangled Banner.
Refreshments will be served afterwards at Stanley
Hill Post #38, American Legion.
The firing will be performed by the Marine Corps League, taps by
Sgt. Lawrence Stone, and the echo by a member of the band. The
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will be asked if they would like to
join the ceremonies for placing wreaths. Other youth groups are
welcome.
There was a discussion of band music. It was recommended that the
Spirit of '76 be invited to participate. The Minute Men have three
drummers now The High School Band will not march in the rain.
Mr. Barnes asked that there be formal parade rosters. Mr. Healy will
bring the necessary information as to the parade order, etc. to next
week's meeting.
APRIL 19th.
The committee met with Kingston Howard, Chief Marshal, and made
changes and corrections in the raster. The entire list of guests
was checked as well.
Mr Fenske announced that the Town Celebrations Committee was asked
to attend the Rotary Ball at the Belfry Club April 18th at 8:00 p.m.
The Committee has been invited by the Minute Men to attend the
ceremonies at the Old North Church on Saturday night.
Mr. Gaughan will represent the committee at Concord on Sunday.
Mr` Gaughan is checking with the Lions Club to see if Miss Keefe,
last year's Tri-Con Hat recipient has been invited to this year's
ceremonies.
Mr. Fenske will deliver the signs to Mr. Lewis on Forest Street.
The Little League would like to be considered for the Sunrise Parade
next year. Corydon Wyman, 411 Marrett Road, is the man to contact.
The State Police will escort the cars to East Lexington after
bringing Revere and Dawes.
The Celebrations Committee and invited guests can park their cars at
the Belfry Club before noon.
A limousine will take Selectman Chairman Cole to the Revere-Dawes
Ceremony.

Mr. O'Sullivan from Execuphone called Mrs. Litchfield regarding the
public address system. They were informed another firm was doing
it this year, and they asked to be considered for another year.
Mr. Douglas of Hanscom Field will be the official photographer at a
fee of $10.00. The camera will be left at the reviewing stand for
him, and he will return it to Mr. Sperduto. Mrs. Litchfield will
notify Mr. DiGiammarino the amount of film to buy.
There will be a fixed Civil Defense unit at the Reviewing Stand, and
mobile units at Percy Road and the Chief Marshal's Headquarters.
Announcements of the parade's progress can be made at the Reviewing
Stand, plus the winners of the Jaycee's House Decorating Contest.
It has proved impossible to get Air Police for the Reviewing Stand.
Mr. Howard suggested that past Town Celebrations Committee members
be approached to do this.
The women members of the committee should be at the Battle Green
Inn by 10 30 to help set up the diningroom.
If it is raining at 6.15, the Sunrise Parade will be cancelled. The
afternoon parade never has been cancelled. We will march with
whatever is available.
Mr. Barnes or Mr. Gaughan are authorized to call the Fire Station
and Station WBZ in case of bad weather. The code word "Lexington"
is to be used for WBZ. Mr. Barnes will work out a system with the
Fire Station.
Mr. Gaughan announced that blankets are available at Hanscom Field
if needed. He will try to obtain umbrellas from the funeral homes.
Committee members were asked to bring available umbrellas if there
are showers.
Mrs. Bayle reported that there will be twenty—six at the head table
at the luncheon, and that there will be four tables of ten, and four
tables or eignt ler the drivers.
Each committee member and wife, and the Selectmen will be given
reviewing stand seating plans at luncheon.
The Committee was reminded by the Chief Marshal not to be pressured
by last minute groups to enter the parade. It is now closed to
further entrants.
There were not enough walkie—talkies available for use in this year's
parade.
The Marine Corps League is carrying the Town Flag in the Sunrise Parade.
The Committee will meet Sunday after the program on the Battle Green if
it becomes necessary.
