TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
December 19, 1963
PRESENT Chairman Barnes, Mrs. Litchfield, Mr. DiGiammarino, Mr. Gaughan,
Mrs. Bayle, Mr. Sperduto, Mr. Fenske and Mrs. Beardsley
VISITORS Selectman Lincoln P. Cole; Raymond Lewis, American Legion;
Willian Brenchik, Marine Corps League; Jerome Garrity, Veterans
of Foreign Wars; Robert Brown, Minute Men.
VETERANS DAY & MEMORIAL DAY:
Chairman Barnes opened the meeting by welcoming the representatives of
the town's veterans organizations to discuss the Veterans Day and
Memorial Day Celebrations being coordinated in the future by the Town
Celebrations Committee as has been suggested. Selectman Cole explained
the reasons for this considered change — that the Town Celebrations
Committee does not manage the celebrations, but rather coordinates —
that there would probably be a financial advantage for combining all the
town celebrations in one budget. It was also mentioned that the veterans
organizations would have the benefit of the committee's publicity function
as well.
A lengthy discussion followed with each representative expressing the views
of his organization. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was opposed to any
change; the American Legion, Minute Men and Marine Corps League were in
favor of the change. After the visitors left, it was suggested that the
Town Celebrations Committee start working immediately with these groups,
and that we have definite plans to improve the celebrations, with
package plans to present to the schools for their participation.
