HomeMy WebLinkAbout1963-09-26-TCC-min.pdf 59 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE September 26, 1963 Present at the second meeting of the 1963-64 Town Celebrations Committee were Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Beardsley and Messrs Fenske, Rudd, DiGiammarino, Sperduto, Gaughan and later on Mr Barnes Mr Gaughan as acting chairman welcomed Mr Fenske to the committee Mrs Litchfield read a letter from Mr Lester CORRESPOND- Goodridge principal of Hancock School accepting the ENCE tree planting ceremony on UN Day at that school There is no change in the treasurer's report Mr Gaughan suggested the committee examine its future needs and buy any necessities before Dec when the surplus must be returned to the Town. Mr DiGiammarino gave details of the Essay UN DAY Contest at the high school which will take place Oct. 10, from 7 30 to 11 The L. W V. is appointing the judges The assigned topic concerns efforts of the UN to keep the peace - using a live example Miss Mac Intire is ordering materials for the contest from her alloted budget of $50. There rill be an assembly at the high school UN Day when a representative from Rotary will present the 2 winners with their prizes, money for a 2 day trip for 4 to New York Mrs Beardsley has ordered materials for UN Day from the World Affairs Council and will contact Mr Karl Myren at the Cary Library to ask that they have bulletin board displays and flag displays for UN Day The Marine -Corps League has teen anproached—by—BATTLE GREEN MrDiGiammarino and is working outdetails After some CEREMONY discussion it was voted by the Committee to rotate the churches and synagogues giving the convocation at this ceremony as is done for April 19 As last year Rev Handley of the Episcopal Church was invited, this year one of the priests or rabbis will be approached Mr Sperduto contacted the Lions and they are checking on their gift of a flag for the green. Mr Di Giammarino said that our committee sends out the invita- tions to officials for all the functions on UN Day Mrs Beardsley was given a schedule to follow for the publicity for UN Day. 60 UNICEF Mr Barnes has contacted Mr Farwell, Pres of the PTA Council, and they have agreed to the idea of sponsoring the Halloween collection program if the in- 1 dividual PTA units so desire The Council is contact- ing each elementary school PTA unit by letter, and when they have the answers we can move ahead In the meantime Town Celebration Committee members have been assigned individual PTA' s to contact if this program is acceptable to them. Mrs Litchfield, Estabrook School; Mr. Sperduto, Fiske School and Maria Hastings; Mr Rudd, Munroe Mr Fenske, Parker School ; Mr Di Giammarino, Franklin; Mrs Beardsley Adams and Harring- ton; and Mr Gaughan, Hancock School Tree Planting Ceremony: It was voted that the Town Celebrations Committee ordered 4 plaques for 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966, to be used at the Tree Planting Ceremonies As there are no plaques on hand, Mrs Litchfield will immediately order these The previous cost was $15 apiece APRIL 19 Mr DiGiammarino said there was an article in the Sunday Boston Globe giving a detailed history of the Lynn Village Drum Band It was suggested that this be used with their approval for April 19 publicity The committee was informed that there was a tape of the music of the 250th pageant in our files which may be borrowed We will meet at 7 45 next week to get business under way before the visitors arrive Respectfully submitted, Audrey Beardsley, Recording Secretary
