TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
April 4, 1963
Present at the twenty-first meeting of the
1962-63 Town Celebrations Committee were Mrs Fox,
Mrs Litchfield and Messrs. Howard, Barnes, Gilman,
Gaughan, DiGiammarino, Rudd and. Broderick, Chief
Marshal
Guests were : Mr Gurley, Concord Dog Training
School ; Mr & Mrs Lloyd, 4-H Horse Team; Mr Lewis,
Business Manager, Musical Drama : Dr MacDonald, Con-
cord; Mr Tower, Concord Mr Worth. Aleppo Temple ;
Mr Welsh , Minuteman Freedom Committee Mr Parks,
Chairman, 250th Anniversary Committee and Mr Brunchick,
Marine Corps League
The minutes of March 14 and 21 were approved as
submitted
The State Executive Office wrote that Gov CORRESPOND-
Peabody hopes to arrange his schedule so as to attend ENCE
some of the activities
Gen McGonagle accepted
St Vincent JJ ' s Drum and Bugle Corps accepted
We refused the request for invitation from the
Sons of Union Veterans
The Westford band cannot come
Countryside Pioneer Brigade with to march in
a.m parade, take off p.m. roster
Mr Carroll of the Harvard University Press
called about 6 Russian publishers whom he wants to
bring on the 19th He will be referred to Mrs Flem-
ings of the L.W.V.
(Mr Howard asked Mrs Litchfield to make a
control sheet of foreign guests )
Mr Tarbox asked to enter the Lawrence High
School. Band from Falmouth
The Golden Eagle Drill Team from Everett was
refused
The Reading Drill Team asked to enter parade
They may if they will provide their own transportation

Mr Stires, who had called Mrs Fox, was ap-
proved for entering the Arli-gton High School Band in fl
the parade, and will take the place of Westford
Call from Mrs King on an antique fire engine
was given to Mr Rudd to handle
PM PARADE Mr Robert C Gurley, Pres of the Concord Dog
Training Club was ariven permission to enter He will
have 2 lines of dogs with trainers, led by a Newfound-
land pulling a cart Trainers plan to wear armbands and
tricorns
SUNRISE Mr & Mrs Lloyd were given instructions for the
PARADE 4-H Horse Team Mr Ricky Hopwood is President
CONCORD Dr MacDonald would like to see more in the Con-
cord papers on Lexington' s Anniversary Mrs Fox will
see to this
Mr Tower brought prints of the battles, suggest-
ing the committee sell them Since we cannot do this,
and it is too late this year, this might be done by an
organization in 1964 Mr Rudd plans to carry them in
his store
Mr Tower gave the committee a program of the
100th Anniversary of the Battle of Lexington It is in
Mrs Fox' s charge at the present
Latin American Banouet
Committee members are requested to send checks at once
to Box 1713.
Chief Marshal ' s Report
Mr Broderick has contacted the Legion, VFW and the
National Guard and feels we are well covered on their
participation
He has had 300 rosters printed
He prefers to lead the parade without a staff band or
color guard
They Nobly Dar'd :
Mr Lewis gave us a ticket report He feels the pro-
duction is in good shape financially, and if there is
a surplus, it could go into the LeRoy S Brown fund
Aleppo Temple Units :
Mr Worth reported to us that participation in this
unit will be anywhere from 200 to 300 persons, plus 2
bands.

Shuttle Bus :
Mr Howard felt we would need an extra shuttle this year.
New Town Flag:
Mr Brunchick of the Marine Corps League came in to
discuss the presentation. The flag is an indoor type,
and cannot be run up the pole It will be place on a
stand near the rostrum There will be publicity on
this flag and a picture taken
Latin American Guests :
Mr Welsh came in to present his case to the committee
for having them take part in the parade, and ask for
our reconsideration
After some discussion, Mr Barnes submitted the follow-
ing motion:
"I move that the Latin American guests be allowed to
parade up Mass Ave , in a manner to be determined later
by the Town Celebrations Committee, but that the Minute-
man Freedom Committee, or others who may later invite
foreign or American dignitaries, clearly understand that
any future invitations carry no implication of joining
the actual parade, or of taking part in any other pub-
lic display, or to be given a place on the reviewing
stand , unless the Celebrations Committee so authorizes "
The motion was passed
Reviewing Stand :
Mr Howard reported there will be a few seats left A
motion was made and seconded to invite the 250th An-
niversary Committee to take these
Mr Howard made a motion that the automobile caravan
for distinguished guests at the head. of the parade pre-
cede the Chief Marshal and his staff by an interval of
5 minutes to allow time for all guests to mount the Re-
viewing Stand and clear all cars from parade route to
avoid stalling the parade
The motion was passed
It was decided. that if some of the guests want to walk,
they would be told that the Chief Marshal has ordered
that no celebrities shall walk
"The Spirit of '76" will lead the parade, but keep it
in sight.

250th Anniversary Report :
Mr Parks read us a letter stating that Mr Lewis is in [ 1
complete charge of the musical drama as business mana-
ger Mr Cronin and Mr Bentley remain as a steering
committee, and Mrs Baltz is the liaison between the
committee and the production
He submitted the promram for the athletic events sche-
duled for April 20
As for the other Lexingtons, his committee has decided
to send them a letter about our Anniversary
The stickers are almost all gone
They are trying to get signs for the town Boundaries
The tree planting ceremony is scheduled for 12 noon on
the 19th Since this day is the prerogative of the
Celebrations Committee, this will be changed.
This Historical Society program has been changed. to 7
p m , April 21
This will avoid a conflict between Mr Worthen ' s lecture
and the NBC special on Concord and Lexington
They wish to participate in the movies which the TCC
usually has taken and will budget $100 for this
They have requested a proclamation for the 250 Anniver-
sary, and Mr Worthen will write it
Rosters and Programs:
The a m and p m parade rosters are completed, and will
be mailed out by Mrs Bayle The program for the 250th
and the lgth has gone out via the Lexington School Bul-
letin Copies have been left in the library and the town
offices More will be placed in stores and other busi-
nesses
Anniversary Ball :
Mr Howard and Mrs Fox are disturbed that only 300
1 tickets were printed for this Mr Howard will look
into it
Decorating of British Grave
The Minutemen have invited the British Consul to attend
their ceremony to take place after the parade He will
be our guest at lunch and in the parade He will be
our highest protocol guest at the luncheon
President Kennedy:
Mr Howard reported a definite no from the President r
Mrs Litchfield was asked to write for a special mes-
sage from the President for the Anniversary
Fiske Hill Flag Ceremony:
The Minutemen will participate in this and decorate
the British. Frave
The flag used in the exchange with Concord should be
stored and used yearly.
Mrs Litchfield is to let selectmen know of this cere-
mony Mrs Fox will write to Mr. Adams on his schedule.
"Spirit of '76" :
Mr Maxner has arranged to have the drums repaired at
our expense, and they will then become the property of
the town, and in our custody all year He has paid
the bill out of his own pocket and should submit a
voucher to us
