TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
February 7, 1963
Present at the fourteenth meeting of the 1962-63
Town Celebrations Committee were : Mrs Litchfield, Mrs
Fox and Messrs Howard, Gilman, Barnes, Rudd & Gaughan
Mrs Bayle and Mr DiGiammarino were absent. Guests
included Chief Rycroft and Mr Broderick
Mr Howard gave the Police Chief a brief rundown APRIL 19
of the events of the joint celebration this spring Of
particular importance will be the visit of the Pan-
American ambassadors Another special item may be a
firing demonstration on the Green by the Sixth Massa-
chusetts Continentals
Chief Rycroft thought that the 19th would still
remain the biggest problem for his Department If the
President should come, protection would be out of local
police jurisdiction
A meeting with him will be arranged just before
the 19th to go over additional details, probably April 11
I [ Chief Rycroft was concerned about Revere' s arrival
at 1 o'clock. He felt he stayed too long, and is worried
about the horses in the crowd He feels he should leave
before Dawes arrives Mr Howard will straighten this
out with the National Lancers
There was some discussion on where the buses
shouldpark to pick up units after the parade Maybe
Hayden can be used
Mr Howard announced that Mr Broderick will be
Chief Marshall of the afternoon parade Mrs Fox will
do a publicity story on this.
Mr. Howard announced that Mr John J Rudd has COMMITTEE
been appointed by the Selectmen to fill the vacancy AFFAIRS
left by the resignation of Mr Poplawski.
The minutes of January 24 & 29 were approved
and accepted
Mrs Litchfield reported she had received a CORRESPOND-
tentative acceptance of our invitation from Reading ENCE
High School They said that the bad weather last year
ruined their uniforms, and suggested we carry insurance
to cover this Mr Howard will check into this, and if
he finds the fee for such coverage is prohibitive, we
will have to cancel this school

Mrs Litchfield and Mr Howard discussed
vouchers for the 250th committee They have to be ap-
proved by Mr Howard and we should provide them with
forms
Mrs Litchfield had a call from a Mr Olson who
runs a flag shop in Amesbury, and he wants to bid on
the decorations Mr Gaughan will talk to him
CHECK LIST The committee went over items on the check list
which can be completed at this time Items of note are
as follows :
Mr Gaughan reported he had asked Col Wilcox at Hanscom
Field what they use for a stand They use a flat bed
trailer, with steps, and can make it available to us
It can be railed

The League of Women Voters will
American visitors in addition to their usual foreign
students
Mrs Litchfield reported that the next clergymen in
order for the ceremony on the Green would come from
the Sacred Heart Church, Church of Christ and then
the Pilgrim Church She has written to every band , and
to Dr Hunt in regard to antique cars The latter may
invite out of town car clubs, but at no expense to the I`
town
Mr Howard has been working to get one of the astronauts
to Lexington for the celebration
Mrs Litchfield will write to the Naval District Com-
mander to see if we can get representation from the
USS Lexington on the 19th
SUB- This committee would be delighted to join us
COMMITTEE for dinner and meeting on March 7 at the Battle Green
Inn
OLD GUARD Mr Broderick inquired if we had any interest
in inviting this organization from Washington, as they
are a natural for the 19th This was investigated and
found much too expensive They did come to Lexington
in June, and put on an excellent shot', which did not have
nearly enough publicity Mr Howard said the subcommittee
had talked of this, and he would bring up the matter again
with Mr. Parks for action

Mrs. Fox brought up a suggestion of Mr Gaughan' s MORNING
(- that the TCC should march together in the AM parade PARADE
After some discussion of finding men to handle the
parade, now two divisions, and possibly using eagle
scouts, the committee agreed to this
The American Legion plans to provide flags for
the school children who join the parade at Munroe
School Mr Gilman felt that these children were asked
to be at Munroe much too early
Mrs Fox asked if the 250th subcommittee should
be invited to march in the morning parade It was
agreed that they should, and could perhaps lead the
second division They should be identified in some
way
