TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
October 4, 1962
The Committee met at the Town Offices at 7 :45
p m Present were : Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Fox and
Messrs Howard (for a short time) , Barnes , Gilman,
DiGiammarino and Poplawski. Mr Gaughan was absent
Because of the headline publicity in the Minute- THANKS-
Man in regard to the cancellation of the Community GIVING
Thanksgiving Service, Mr Howard joined the meeting for
a few minutes to discuss this He told the Committee
of his presentation of the facts to the Board of Select-
men, and of their agreement with our position The com-
mittee agreed that a letter to the editor of the paper
explaining the cancellation more fully should be writ-
ten, and a news release also Mrs Fox read a letter
she had composed, and with some changes, this will be
sent to the Minute-Man The Committee made and passed
a motion to this effect , allowing for revision by Mr.
Howard and Mrs Fox.
Mr Howard reminded the committee of part of
our annual report in the Town Report, 1961, which
clearly states our problems with the Thanksgiving
Service, and indicates the TCC was planning some action
on this matter
Mr Poplawski, as chairman of U.N. Day, con- U N DAY
ducted the meeting, and led the discussion
He asked Mrs Litchfield to write a number of
letters inviting the Selectmen to participate in the
various events, and she will do this when Mrs Fox has
seen Mrs Bears of Franklin School and the time of
their program has been determined
The morning ceremony for U.N Day will be at 7
a.m , with assembly time at 6:50 a m The police are
to be notified of this Mr Handley will be invited
by Mrs Litchfield to give an invocation
Invitations from the Committee will go to the
participants in the flag raising ceremony: namely the
Minute-Men, Rotary, Lions. Elks, LWV, Chamber of Com-
merce, JOB, Kiwanis
Mr Barnes gave us the name of John Garland who
would be willing to take pictures at this event, if
he can have a by-line in the paper Mrs Fox will ask
the Minute-Man and call Mr Garland

Mr Poplawski has been in touch with Mrs Wilson
of the LWV, who is our liaison with the League Every- I
thing is in good order for the Essay Contest
The High School Assembly will be at 10 a m on
October 25. Mr DiGiammarino reported that the school
assembly Committee were asking about the program, and
would like it to be similar to that of 2 years ago
The Chairman of the Board of Selectmen will read the
Governor' s Proclamation (Mrs Fox will send for it at
once) , the League will speak of the purpose of the
Assembly, the Chairman of our Committee will announce
the prizes, and the Rotary representative will award
them Presumably, the winners will read their essays.
The Assembly Committee will send invitations to
guests from outside the school
Mr. DiGiammarino will arrana-'e a meeting between
the Assembly Committee, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Fox and Miss
Maclntyre
The feeling is that the arrangements for the
Essay Contest are all in order and have gone very
smoothly this year
Mr Poplawski reported that Mr John Florentino
of the Elks wants very much to do something in regard
to the Essay Contest, perhaps some sort of prize to
all who participated by writing essays, as recognition
of their effort It was not felt that this wa a good
idea Mr DiGiammarino will talk to Mr Florentino
about the Elks participation in U N Day Mr Di
Giammarino hopes to have a Student Government Day in
Lexington for his students, for which he will need
backing by an organization, but does not plan to do
this through TCC.
Mrs Fox will see Mrs Bears of Franklin School
to discuss her plans The Junior Chamber of Commerce
will definitely donate the tree, and the school has the
choice of where it will be planted as long as it is
practical.
Publicity: Discussion took place on whether to have a
U.N. Headquarters downtown as was done last year Mrs
Fox felt strongly that this was a waste of effort Mrs
Fox will go to the World Affairs Council to get posters,
and she has asked Mrs Wright of the LWV to ask her
workshop if they will be willing to help distribute
them to stores Mr Poplawski suggested dividing the
town into areas, and distribute posters between October
15 and 20 It was decided that the distribution center
477
would be at Mrs Fox' s house Perhaps the Elks would
help Mrs Fox is to look for possible window dis-
plays at the Council, and find out the Library plans
for this year, and will check with Dick Michelson to
see if the Chamber of Commerce plans any displays
The initial publicity story will be released to
the paper for October 11, and will list participating
groups On October 18, the program of U.N Day will
be given in detail. Because U.N Day falls on Wednes-
day, October 24, there is only a slim chance that any
publicity can appear in the paper October 25. Perhaps
a shot of the Flag ceremony might be used Photos of
the High School and Franklin programs will have to run
November 1
Mrs Litchfield has reserved Cary for April 18,
19, 20 and 21 Mr DiGiammarino will reserve the audi-
torium, cafeteria and gym of the High School for the
same dates
