TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
September 20, 1962
The Committee met at the Town Offices at 7:45
p m Present were Mrs. Fox, Mrs Litchfield (for
short time) , Messrs Poplawski, Barnes, Howard, Gil-
man and DiGiammarino Mr Gaughan was absent.
Present also were Dr MCDonald, Concord; Mrs Betty
Fleming, LWV: John A Fiorentino, Elks ; Stewart Otto,
Junior Chamber of Commerce; Haskell Reed, Lions ; Frank
Faulkner, Kiwanis and Dr William Wade, Rotary
Mr Poplawski reported that Mrs Polly Wilson U N. DAY
will be in charge of the Essay Contest for the LWV, and
everything has been planned. He asked representatives
of the service clubs to attend tonight, in the hope
that all will participate in making U.N. Day a success
He has planned a short ceremony for 7:00 on the green,
which would include our committee, the Selectmen, the
Minute-Men, the veterans groups, and guests Lawrence
Stone will play "to the Colors". The Park Department
has been checked on flags for the Green. A letter on
this last should go from the Selectmen to the Park De-
partment
Franklin School will have the tree planting
ceremony this year
Mr Otto from the JCs will find out if his or-
ganization will assume the cost of the tree as they
have in the past
Mrs. Fox mentioned that we have no trouble in
promoting U N Day in the schools, they take care of
it anyway, our Problem is with the adult population
Mr Howard reported for the Chamber of Commerce
that they voted to continue the poster display, and the
retail merchants will support the effort
Mr Reed of the Lions, will report to them, and
ask if they will donate 6 additional U N. flares so the
town has one for each year of ,xistence of the U.N , as
a means of honoring its birthday
Mr Faulkner, Kiwanis, believes his organization
will contribute as they did last year by buying U.N.
material for distribution

Dr Wade, Rotary, said that they would again
donate the prize to the winning boy and girl of the
Essay Contest and send them and their chaperones to
New York
Mr Howard asked the Committee how they felt
about a speaker for U.N. Day. Mr Gilman will contact
the World Federalists, and they might work with the
League and run a program
Mrs Fleming, LWV, reported that the Essay
Contest would be run much as it has heretofore The
students will write the essays October 11 The As-
sembly has to be scheduled on the 25th, and only
juniors and seniors will attend This is the day the
Chamber of Commerce is invited to visit the school,
which would work in well with the program
Mr Fiorentino of the Elks said his organiza-
tion might help on the window displays to promote U.
N Day
Mr Gilman brought up the fact that we had not
really discussed community participation In U.N Day
Discussion took place on whether it was worthwhile to
have a speaker since there were such small audiences
when Mr Phillips and Mr Morse spoke on the U.N
Mrs. Fleming mentioned that the League has a
group working on the (' N as a project this year, and
they would support any such effort. Mr Gilman sug-
gested that this group might have some idea for a U
N. Day affair, perhaps a debate on a U.N problem.
Dr Wake suggested a controversial figure might draw
people.
Miss McIntyre has requested her usual money to
buy U.N materials for her students
Mr Poplawski is Chairman for U.N Day, assisted
by Mr Barnes Mr. DiGiammarino will be our school
liaison, and Mrs Fox U.N Day advisor
250TH Dr Wade is head of the Rotary Committee for the
250th Celebration, and spoke of running a dance Per-
haps there will be 2 dances, one formal and one in-
formal, and we might follow Concord' s example and use
the Minute-Men and Revere. Other contributions from
Rotary for other events will be welcome Mr Howard
will go to their Board Meeting and perhaps then pre-
sent the matter to the whole Rotary Group

Mr Worthen and Mr Foster have resigned from
the 250th Committee for reasons of health. Mr Worthen
will continue as consultant , and conduct the Historical
Society Program. Mr Grant Cole will replace Mr. Foster.
At our next meeting the 250th Committee will
present their final program and budget. They have
financial commitments which must be met soon. and our I;
Town Meeting Members must be alerted ahead of time of
the plans and, the expenses involved. Mr. Howard is
planning a speakers' kit which can be used by both com-
mittees to alert Iexingtonians on this matter It will
be used for verbal presentations at meetings of various
organizations.
Mr. Reed reported that he had contacted Brad
Morse in regard to the M. rime Band for our Anniversary,
and that it would cost about 35000. if it were possible,
and it seems to be impossible He is after another
band instead.
Mrs Litchfield read the replies she has received THANKS-
to her letter inquiring about participation in our GIVING
Thanksgiving service I'

Mrs Borngasser, Hancock Church (Choir Director) ,
wants more information
Grace Chapel , happy to cooperate
Rabbi Rosenblum. Temple Emunah, interested
Mr Lindsay, Methodist Church. pleased to help
Bible Chapel, reported they have no choir
All asked for more detailed information
Mrs Litchfield reports we are in good financial FINANCES
condition, with an excess of $600. in our account , and

our funds to Mr DiGiammarino We are working to re-
solve the re-embursement of the Sixth Massachusetts
Continentals.

bers until our new recording secretary takes office MEETINGS
We are aiming toward more organized and systematic
meetings, to get our work done in a business-like
fashion so that we can close by 10 15, and to have
fewer meetings Our key meetings this fall are to-
days ' s. September 27 on Thanksgiving, and December 6
on ratriots ' Day. Letters will be sent to all the
heads of organizations informing them of these dates
On December 6, our April 19 films will be shown, and
also those taken by the Air Force. Dr. McDonald will
- contribute some from Concord

The Committee met at the Town Offices at 7:45
p.m Present were: Mrs Fox, Mrs Litchfield and
Messrs Howard, Gilman, Barnes, Gaughan, Poplawski.

CORRES- Mrs Litchfield read some letters to the Commit-
PONDENCE tee, including copies of letters sent by Concord in-
viting Gen Verbeck and the National Commander of the
American Legion
U N DAY Mr Poplawski reported that he has met with Mr
DiGiammarino to discuss U.N Day, and that everything
is in good order The one problem is whether there
should be a speaker for that day, and he has reserved
the High School auditorium for the evening of the 24th
in the event it is needed
The plan for the ceremony on the Green has been
prepared, and copies will be given to committee mem-
bers Mr Poplawski would like to have Mr Handley
present He is the Chaplain of the Minute-Men
The President of the Rotary Club will be in-
vited to the High School, and also the judges of the
essay contest
Mr Fox will get in touch with Mrs Bears of
the Franklin School in regard to the tree-planting
ceremony there
Three issues of the Minute-Man will come out
before U N. Day Mr Poplawski will go over publicity
with Mrs Fox
THANKS- Mr Gaughan reported on plans for the Community
GIVING Thanksgiving service He feels that the response to
our request for choirs has not been good Everyone re-
quested a program of the Service. Mr Revis of Temple
Isaiah told Mrs Litchfield that his choir would be
pleased to participate, and she also heard that the
Methodist Church would be glad to help.
Mr Howard said that by October 11 plans for
Thanksgiving should be ready Mr Gaughan brought up
the fact that although 35 notices were sent out re-
garding Thanksgiving, no one came to this meeting Mr
Gilman said this should be done by a personal call.
