HomeMy WebLinkAbout1962-06-07-TCC-min.pdf 465 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE r June 7, 1962 The Committee met at the Town Offices at 8 00 p.m. Present were Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Fox and Messrs Howard, Gilman, Gaughan, Poplawski Also present were Mr Barnes and Mr DiGiammarino They were not seated as members since they do not have the background on our Thanksgiving service problems. Mrs Fernberger was absent Mr Gilman spoke on the Thanksgiving service, THANKS- saying that he feels it has significance, and purpose, GIVING and should be carried oh. Mr Handley agreed that it was a good thing to stand up for an ideal, but that there are times when we must pick and choose, and perhaps we should con- centrate on something that is successful He spoke of the difficulty of making a success of Memorial Day He feels the timing of the service is not important, but he likes the idea of trying the afternoon, and em- phasizing the family, and. getting a speaker to speak on his own faith He feels the Committee has done all it can, and we have to recognize that this is another thing in an already crowded community calendar Suggestions of speakers were made, and Mr Howard pointed out that we cannot afford big names, and even on the local level we have a most difficult time getting people There was discussion of the proper place to hold the Service, with Diamond, Muzzey and Estabrook among others H As Mr Taylor and Mr Handley left, Mr Howard asked if they would be disappointed if we voted to drop the service. Mr Taylor replied that he would not blame us if we did Mr Howard then asked for a motion on the Thanks- giving question as a basis for discussion Mr Gilman moved that we have a Thanksgiving Community Service at 4 00 p.m , Sunday, November 18, and pay a , 100. honorarium to a speaker The motion was passed I� 466 Mr Howard suggested that he ask the Chief of Chaplains of the Army to be speaker, a General Tobe.y, with whom he has a connection The rotation of clergy will go on as before Mr Cobb moved that the service be continued under the same general format as before, but with a speaker regardless of sectarianism The motion was passed A motion was made and passed to hold it in Cary Hall A motion was made and passed to ask the local choirs to participate Mr Howard said that invita- tions to the choirs should go out at once, and asked that each one of us find out what we can about rent- ing a portable organ Perhaps some organization will donate it for the occasion Mr Howard asked Mr Barnes who was active in the Brotherhood group, for suggestions Mr Harry Sussman is the driving force behind this group, and Mr Barnes will ask him for suggestions The town Bro- therhood group has members in all churches, and they might be able to help us NEXT Mr Howard announced that the last meeting of MEETING the season would be June 14, and the agenda would be as follows : 1 The organization of the new Celebrations Committee 2 Officers will be decided on 3 Orientation of new members 4 Report of the 250th Subcommittee FILING Mr Cobb purchased. a filing cabinet through Mr CABINET Foster, and it is at the bottom of the stairs in the Town Offices, in the first door to the right, on the left-hand side Mrs Fox and Mr Howard have the keys, and Mrs Fox will have more made Patricia Fox for Mrs Fernberger
