TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
May 3, 1962
The Committee met at the Town Offices at 8:00
p m Present were : Mrs Fox, Mrs Litchfield and
Messrs Cobb, Howard, Douglass and Gilman
Half of this meeting was devoted to discussing REVIEW OF
ideas for improvement of next year's celebration. APRIL 19
1 The aide from the division following should assist
with the preceeding division
2 CD Communications didn't work too well
3 Public address system should be aimed in the proper
direction
4 "Spirit of '76" got to the parade origin too late
and should be earlier next year
5 Would like to see the committee participate next
year in the April 18 ceremony at Old North Church
6 U N guest situation was discussed, as well as
consideration of flags in the foreign visitors area
and how to handle the situation next year It was sug-
gested that the reserved section be continued for these
people for an unlimited number of hosted visitors and
that it is relevant to hold out our hand as a gesture
of welcome to them The question of how official this
should be was raised
7. The question of what should. and does April 19 mean
today, relating this to what today is and. the meaning_
behind what happened in 1775 was brought out as food
for some philosophical thinking by committee members
8. Morning parade this year had the largest attendance
in years. The day dawned clear and sunny, truly a
glorious morning. Since the parade is now so large,
it was suggested that it be divisionalized, as is the
afternoon parade. It was also suggested that the com-
mittee march together, except that this brings up the
problem of division marshals by the committee Another
suggestion was that there be a group of costumed "em-
battled farmers" behind the "Spirit of '76"
460
9. Lady Lexington portraits were discussed Both
portraits are going to Hayden instead of to Cary for rm
the first year. Two committee members should speak
to the Prom-Manaders ' advisors to clarify our rela-
tionship with the group and the extent of involvement
on both sides No committee member should make any
committments with the organization, and any change
should be done this spring There is some thought
that the photograph is overdone, 16 x 20 being too
large : also, the publicity responsibility should be
clarified
10 Mr Howard suggested that we use the circular
driveway which goes around the new medical building
in lining up cars for distinguished guests before the
afternoon parade next year to avoid congestion on Mass,
Ave .
Subcommittee The 250th subcommittee has requested
that the TCC have full responsibility for the Ball
next year We will do this but will delegate the
responsibility for details
Films Motion pictures of the 1962 parade will be
shown to the committee, May 10
THANKS- Copies of Mrs Fox's thorough report on inter-
GIVING views with the local clergy had been distributed prior
to this meeting so that the committee could discuss
what to do with or about the Thanksgiving Service next
year It was suggested that this not be held next
year, in view of apathy by both the citizens and all
but 2 of the clergy This would, of course, have to be
approved by the Board of Selectmen However, there
did seem to be some spark to have this service continue
on a changed basis, perhaps more religious and there-
fore more meaningful, but certainly on a more sound
basis than the idea of merely gathering the town to-
gether for one more activity This new basis should
be decided upon then proposed to the clergy, deciding
on what to do based on their renewed look at our ideas
It was suggested that Rev Handley and Rev. Taylor,
who were most outspokenly in favor, read the report
and give advice to the committee Everyone agrees
that the Service as we now have it is hopeless, satisfy-
ing no need All also agree that this should be a com-
munity religious service if it is to be anything at all.
The various problems of trying to combine all religions
into one service were discussed, and the matter was
left that we will further discuss it after the 2
ministers have read the Fox Report.
