TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
March 22, 1962
The Committee met at the Town Offices at 8:00
p.m Present were: Mrs. Litchfield, Mrs Fox and
Messrs. Howard, Cobb, Gilman, Poplawski and Gaughan
Mrs Fernberger and Mr Douglass were absent
Also present were : Grady Holt, Boy Scouts;
Eric Handley, Photographer for April 19; Bruce Obear,
his assistant ; Ray Lewis. Chief Marshal ; Lincoln Cole,
Chief of Staff ; and the following Marshals and Aides :
Neil Cronin, Ed Cady. Mel Hunt, Joseph Rooney, John J.
Rudd, Jr. , Donald Albertine and Donald Hiscock.
Scouts participation on April 191 Mr. Holt reported APRIL 19
he has mailed letters to 45 troops and packs of scouts
and cubs, that there will be a personal follow-up, and
that the response has been good
He gave us the name of 2 eagle scouts to act as
aides in the morning parade, and names of a scout and
a. cub to participate in the ceremonies on green
Eagle Scouts : David Sticknev, Troop 119
Richard Olsen, Troop 122
Scout: Joseph Kitrosser, Troop 122
Cub: Winston White, Pack 159
The scouts will not have a float this year, but
perhaps next year as a District
One problem has come up Leaders have objected
to theii ylaa.c in Lb., parade, end ne believes the scout
Masters should have recognition for their work.
The Sea Scouts have not as yet been contacted
for the flag raising.
Afternoon Parade: We have not yet heard from the Army
Band, and Mr. Cole was asked to check. It was agreed
not to invite any more bands Navy and Marine march-
ing units are coming The State Commander of the Am-
erican Legion, Dr Charles Soforenko is coming. For
the VFW, we usually do not know what units will come PI
until the last minute. Mr Poplawski has asked the
Commander of the Marine Corps League to write to Mr
Howard about their participation. Mr Cady reported
it was early to know who would be in the Third Division,
but he wants to run the list in the roster as last year.

Honored Guests Edward A. Hill of Macy' s declined our
invitation with regrets, as did the Secretary of the
Air Force, Zuckert, General Terhune and Verbeck have
accepted with Aides, as have Admirals Espe and Harding
St Patrick's Day Parade : One of our guests stated
that the Commanding Officer of the 94th Reserve Divi-
sion had a float with cannon from Fort Ticonderoga. We
will try to get this float and/or some military vehicles
for April 19
Traffic: Mr Lewis asked that traffic on Mass Ave
be cut off at one o ' clock He will make maps for units
arriving on buses to be sent with the roster. There
was discussion of indicating the hosting centers on
this map.
Photographers for the 19th: Eric Handley plans to get
human interest into the filming of 19th He would like
2 rosters, and some identification Mrs Litchfield
and Mrs Fox will take care of this He will get his
film through his employer, Bartlett Camera in Bedford
The amount of money he will be allowed for film was
discussed and S75. was agreed upon
Fire Engines: Mr Howard has discussed the Fifth
Division with the Fire Commissioner, William Fitz-
gerald He, too, agrees that the noise of the sirens
is out of control He has made it clear to partici-
pants
to limit the number of vehicles, using Holy
Thursday as the reason. Mr Gilman commented that un-
usual pieces of equipment would be better
Floats: The place of the Historical Society' s antique
fire engine was discussed, and it was agreed to place
it at the head of the Fourth Division
Floats were drawn out of a hat to determine
place in the parade. Results were as follows:

Miscellaneous : Much of this meeting was taken up with
the planning of the roster
Costumes for the "Spirit of '76" are complete
except for the stockingswhich Mrs Fox will get
There was some discussion of publicity. Mrs
Fox prepared a tentative schedule for Mr Sherman at
the Minute-Man. p[p
Mr. Howard asked that Mr. Gilman' s report at
Town Meeting. March 19, be made part of our permanent
record.
It was agreed that instead of having the
Patriots ' Day program reproduced by the Minute-Man at
a cost of about $50. . we would simplify the informa-
tion and have it on the back of the School Bulletin
which is distributed to all school children In Lexing-
ton This would be at no cost to us Mrs Fox will
attend to it. Must be ready by March 26.
Mr Lewis offered to have the roster reproduced
thereby saving the committee about $90.
Mrs Litchfield will ask Mrs. Williams (former
member) to help address the envelopes for mailing the
rosters
Stowe will send marching units of scouts and.
explorers to P.M Parade.
Mr Gaughan made a tentative plan for those who
will ride in cars in P.M. Parade.
