TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
September 21, 1961
The Committee met at the Town Offices at 8t00
p.m. , Mr Cobb presiding. Present were Mrs Fox, Mrs.
Litchfield, Mrs Fernberger and Messrs. Cobb, Gilman,
and Poplawski, Mrs. Pullen and Mr Cronin. Absent
were Messrs. Howard, Douglass and Gaughan.

Supply staffs for U. N. flags at the schools and be SUGGESTIONS
sure they are put out
Ask Lions to support U.N celebration by supplying
flags and staffs for U.N. flaws on sidewalk
Check ahead with Lexington Choral Society about their
supply of robes
Broaden scope of Thanksgiving Service by urging young
people to attend
Place posters in churches and throughout town before
Thanksgiving Service
Send notification to churches about Thanksgiving Serv-
ice now
Order more hats and arm bands for April 19
Either arrange for private room at Battle Green Inn for
luncheon on April 19 or make definite arrangements else-
where
April 19 luncheon should not be a heavy dinner
It was strongly urged that this committee think now
about the 250th celebration of the Town Mrs Litch-
field will write the Selectmen asking about our
responsibility in this celebration.
Motion was made and passed to obtain permission U. N. DAY
from Selectmen to put up U.N. flags on the street, with
tJrS.-flags;On U.N. day. Mrs -Litchfield Kiri write.
Sea Scouts will be able to participate in a flag
raising so long as it does not interfere with their
school day However, the Marine Corps League is most
happy to do this , in full dress blues, and it was
decided that Mr Poplawski could go ahead and arrange
this with them, for a sunrise ceremony on the Common
et 7t00 a.m. , October 24. He will also have Mr Law-
rence Stone contacted as a bugler We shall still
have to obtain a large U N. flag or uncover the missing
one

Tree Prices quoted for a blue spruce were for 21
to 3 foot trees After some discussion about the in- r—
appropriateness of a ceremony for planting a tree so
small as this, it was decided that Mrs Fox will check
first with Miss McKenney about the possibility of a
larger evergreen tree other than blue spruce, and Mrs.
Litchfield will then speak again to Mr Whitney
Kiwanis: A letter will be sent to the Kiwanis asking
them to sponsor the window decorating contest and
trophy, with they themselves as judges.
Lions: A letter will be sent to the Lions Club, after
permission has been granted (hopefully) to our request
for displaying U.N flags on the sidewalk, asking them
to rent or purchase 30 to 40 U.N. flags for this purpose
Film and Chamber of Commerce Breakfast : The 8 minute
U.N. film "Overture" will be shown at the Chamber of
Commerce breakfast, which all members of the committee
who are able to should attend, Tuesday, September 26,
7:30 a.m. , Battle Green Inn.
The decision about whether or not, and how much,
literature will be ordered will be made after this
breakfast meeting.
Brad Morse Meeting Letters will be sent to all
service clubs in town, a pre-release will be sent this
coming week to the Minute Man and the high school
paper, Highspots It will be announced at the Chamber
of Commerce breakfast Mr Cobb will contact Mr.
Mann (Art Dept at the High School) to see if he can
have posters made pushing this meeting Eventually,
the Boston papers will be covered; also announcements
to the radio stations
THANKS- Bill Madden will speak to the Service this
GIVING year The Lexington Choral Society will sing They
will plan the program A letter will be sent to Mr
Sykes asking him about the supply of robes for the
Chorus.
