TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE

September 7, 1961
The Committee met in the Town Offices at 8:00 p m
Present were Mrs Fox, Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Fernberger,
and Messrs Howard, Cobb, Gilman, Gaughan and Poplawski.
Mr Douglass was absent Mr Howard presided
Guests were Chamber of Commerce (Mr Kolovson) ;
Junior Chamber of Commerce (Mr Whitney) ; League of
Women Voters (Mrs Battin) ; World Federalists (Mr
Tucker) ; Kiwanis (Mr Vedette) ; Lions (Mr Fitzgerald) ;
Rotary (Mr Foster)
Guests at this meeting represented the various U.N. DAY
service organizations who will assist in the celebra-
tion of U.N Day, October 24.
Rotary: As is traditional, Rotary will donate the
prize (a trip to the U.N. in New York for one weekend)
to the winning boy and girl essayists They will be
accompanied by Miss McIntyre
J. C. 's : This group will contribute a blue spruce, to
be planted. at Munroe School this year Mrs Litchfield
will report the amount involved to Mr Whitney
Kiwanis : Mr Vedette offered financial help and will
let the Committee know the extent of this assistance.
Lions: A flag has been ordered, as is customary on the
part of this organization, for Estabrook
World Federalists: Mr Tucker suggested inviting Con-
gressman Morse to Lexington either on U.N Day or dur-
ing that week to speak to a general meeting and hope-
fully stimulate interest in the occasion on the part
of the adult population He offered to sponsor, or
cosponsor the meeting with the TCC, to arrange with
Rep Morse for his appearance, or to guarantee members
for the audience Mr Morse has recently sponsored
legislation pertaining to the U. N. There was much
discussion as to who would sponsor this meeting, how
the other organizations could help insure a good sized
audience, whether or not to serve dinner or simple re-
freshments, and whether the churches would help too
The Committee took the suggestion under advisement and
discussed its merits later on in the meeting Decision
will be made hopefully at the meeting September 14

Chamber of Commerce : The Board of Directors of the C `--
of C. has voted in favor of promoting U.N. Day through
the cooperation of the local merchants, and Mr Kolovson
feels that the retail division will cooperate at the C
of C breakfast meeting by suggesting window displays,
possibly a competition, and in-store displays He, also,
suggested cooperation from the banks and institutional
advertising from such organizations as Raytheon, Itek,
and the Minute Man Educational and promotional mat-
erial would be distributed at this breakfast, which
would, also, include a presentation from the TCC, a
representative of the U.N. organization in Boston and
the Board of the Chamber of Commerce as well
League of Women Voters: The subject for this year's
essay contest will be "United Nations Achievements in
Creating Peace As Seen In The Work Done For The Emergent
African Nations." The League, as usual, has handled the
details of the contest, working with Miss McIntyre
Material has been ordered for the High School and
reference has been pulled and put on reserve at Cary
Library. There was some discussion about qualifica-
tions for participation in the contest and whether or
not to write suggestions for criteria for judging to
those involved The essay will be written on October
11, and the assembly at the High School, at which the
winners will be announced and their essays read, will
be held on U.N Day The Rotary will entertain these
students at a luncheon Miss McIntyre, the L.W.V. and
the T.C.0 will up-date the delineation of responsi-
bilities both for the contest and the assembly
Flags : Mr Gaughan will still attempt to find the U.
N flag which was presented to the Selectmen, and will
pursue the project of using U.N flags in sidewalk
standards alternating with U S flags during U.N. Week
Prize : Mrs Fox will look into the possibility of
presentation of a memento to the essay winners, from
the T C.C. , as a special gift in addition to the trip

VOTED A motion was made and seconded to sponsor an
evening meeting with Congressman Brad Morse as a speaker
on the subject of the United Nations This motion was
amended and passed unanimously to include "after con-
sultation with the Board of Selectmen."
Tree: Mrs Fox will arrange for the tree planting at
Munroe School with Miss McKenney.
THANKS- Dr Harold Hunt will be unable to speak at the
GIVING Thanksgiving Service, which leaves the task of finding
another speaker to Mr Gilman. Suggestions included
William Roger Greeley, Dr Abraham Sachar, Dr Nils
Wessell, Henry Steele Commager.

Competitions: It was explained that as a By-law com- APRIL 19
mittee we are empowered to sponsor only the specific
events as set forth in our by-laws This would not
include competitions among bands any other time than
April 19.
Nothing pressing in relation to April 19 was
brought up at this time The private luncheon and
reception was explained.
Mr. Howard has requested :-400 from the Leroy FINANCES
S. Brown Fund, informally. This fund is for use in
connection with April 19, and it was suggested by Mr
Cole that the Committee request $500. to cover the ad-
ditional cost of the reviewing stand at last year's
celebration Mrs Litchfield will write requesting
same
Mr. Popolowski would like to send a time MISCEL-
schedule of events this committee sponsors to all LANEOUS
service organizations
The next meeting will be Thursday, September
14, at 8:00 p m at the Town Offices Main subject
will be United Nations Day. This meeting adjourned
at 11 :15 p m
