HomeMy WebLinkAbout1961-03-23-TCC-min.pdf 377 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE March 23, 1961 The thirteenth meeting of the 1960-'61 Town I Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen's Room of the Town Office Building at 8100 p.m Present were Mrs. Fox, Mrs Williams, Mrs Litchfield, and Messrs. Cronin, Cobb, Bongiorno, Douglass, Howard and Gilman Also present was Mr Lincoln P. Cole, Jr member of the Board of Selectmen and former Chairman of the Town Celebrations Committee Spirit of '76 Group: APRIL 19 1 A drummer, John King of Shade St , will march in both parades. 2 Mrs Fox has made arrangements for renting wigs and beards in Boston 3 Mr Gilman brought to the meeting the white wig which previously has been worn by Mr Maxner Lexington Guides : Mr Cobb reported that Jim Connell has revised the map of the Battle green and the legend of April 19, 1775, on the reverse side, and the map is being printed by Lexington Press High School After-parade Reception Mr Cobb reported that the L H.S. students will be able to use the cafe- teria for the reception Programs : Mrs. Fox took the morning program to Hayden Centre for mimeographing (Programs will be sent to all participants of the morning parade ) Publicity: 1 Carol Arnold was chosen Queen of the Prom-Manaders and automatically becomes "Lady Lexington-1961" 2. Pictures of the costume making at the High School were taken by Mrs Fox and will be sent to the Lexington newspaper 3. Stories about the Morning Parade and about the new "Spirit of '76" group will be sent to the newspaper for next week's issue (Names of students who will give their organizations' oaths are needed for the Morning Parade story. ) 378 Invited Guests: 1 Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge sent a letter of regret that he cannot attend. 2 Invitations have been sent to the Board of Select- men and their wives. Girl Scouts : Mrs LaPorte reported that the flag code prohibits the carrying of a flag by its corners and. therefore, the Girl Scouts will not carry Mrs . La Porte 's antique flag. Boy Scouts : Mrs. Litchfield will telephone the Boy Scout Headquarters, Minute Man Council, So Border Rd. , Winchester, to inquire for the name of the representa- tive who will be in charge of Lexington Boy Scouts in the parade Reviewing Stand : 1 Mrs Litchfield reported that the Peterson Chair Company will rent regular chairs (not hitched together) for twelve cents each Approximately 60 chairs will be needed 2 A letter will be sent to Mrs Morey, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, before the Board' s meeting next Monday night The letter will request that the review- ing stand be enlarged by 50% as it has proven to be in- adequate in size in the past and a larger number of guests will be expected this year Floats: Mr. Bongiorno reported that the following 12 floats will be in the parade. 1 Prom-Manaders 2. League of Women Voters 3. Junior Chamber of Commerce (float plus car with "Miss Lexington" ) 4 Rotary Club 5 Chamber of Commerce 6 Baptist Church 7 Lions Club 8. 4-H 9 Depositors Trust 10 Grace Chapel 11 Church of Latter Day Saints 12 Temple Isaiah Bands. Marching Units, and Mechanized Equipment : 1 The 18th Army Band , Platoon and Color Guard (Ft Devens) will participate 2. Forty Camp Fire Girls from Dorchester will march, in the Fourth Division 3 A Navy Marching unit from the "U.S.S W.A Lee" will be in the parade. 379 4. Mr Cronin discussed with Mr Cole the possibility of obtaining a piece of mechanized equipment from Ft Devens or some other military installation Parade Roster: Next week the roster will be completed Three reams of paper will be required for mimeograph- ing 200 copies of the parade roster Luncheon: 1 Mrs Litchfield willorder souvenir Minute Man pins for ladies attending the luncheon 2 Mr Cole outlined the following seating plan, accord- ing to military protocol , for guests at the head table at the luncheon: Mrs. 1 Mrs ' Col. Mrs Keyes Keyes Whalen Whalen HEAD TABLE AT LUNCHEON j Automobiles for Dignitaries : Mr Cole suggested the following plan, according to military protocol, for the lining-up of automobiles for the parade : 1 Gov. Volpe--Mrs Morey, Chairman of Board of Selectmen 2. U.S. Rep Bradford Morse--Selectman Alan Adams 3. Maj Gen Bergquist --Selectman Gardner Ferguson R. Rear Admiral Harding --Selectman Lincoln P Cole, Jr. 5. Captain Charles Keyes --Selectman Norman Richards 6 Col Grover Willcox --Mrs Litchfield, Celebrations Committee 7 Lt Col Whalen --Mrs Williams and Mrs. Fox, Celebrations Committee Minuteman Freedom Committee : After much discussion con- cerning ramifications of the visit of African U. N. delegates to Lexington for its Patriots ' Day celebra- tion, Mr Howard suggested that : 1. A letter be sent to Dr Howard Smith of the Minute- man Freedom Committee, sponsors of the U.N. delegates' visit The letter would outline points of concern to the Celebrations Committee in connection with the delegates' visit 380 2 A copy of the letter to Dr Howard Smith should be sent to the Board of Selectmen. 3 A cover letter should be sent to the Board of Selectmen advising them of the following ramifications in connection with the visit of the African U.N dele- gates : a Reviewing stand--necessity for enlargement of stand and for seating arrangement to avoid segregation. b. Time schedule --that the delegates should be in the area of Lexington for lunch by 1 :00 p.m. , April 19, and should be on the reviewing stand at 2 :30 p.m c Security --that adequate precautions must be taken to insure the safety of the visiting U.N. delegates 4 A copy of the cover letter to the Board of Select- men should be sent to Chief of Police John Rycroft. (Chief of Police Rycroft should be invited to the next Celebrations Committee meeting ) Miscellaneous: r 1. Mrs Pullen wishes to borrow the Celebrations Com- mittee Patriots' Day film for illustrating a talk which she plans to give to the Rotary Club in April. (Mrs Williams will inform Mrs Pullen that she may borrow the film. ) 2 Mrs Litchfield has ordered the wreaths which will be placed on monuments 3 Mr Raymond Lewis will be in charge of children who wish to march in the morning parade but are not affil- iated with a participating organization 4 Mr Cole commented that there is interest in the town in a year 'round Brotherhood Committee He asked that the Celebrations Committee consider how this might be accomplished 5 Mr Cronin mentioned that this is the beginning year of the Civil. War Centennial and wondered whether some notice of it should be taken in connection with the Patriots ' Day celebration. 381 6 It was decided that the Celebrations Committee would not attempt to incorporate the African U.
