HomeMy WebLinkAbout1960-09-22-TCC-min.pdf 329 TO4N CELEBRATIONS IS COVMITT 'E • SEPTEMBER 2', 1960 •• The first meeting of the 1960-'61 Town Celebra- tions Committee was held in the Town Accountant 's Office of the Town Office Building at P 00 p m Present were Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Fo Lro Nilliarns, and Messrs Cronin, Cobb, Homaard, Bonrfiorno, Douglass and Gilman Also present were Fre Philip Pullen and Mr Lincoln P Cole, Jr , former members of the Committee and Mrs Rog r Wilson, representative of ti-e League of Women Voters in charge of the United Nations Contest Mr Cronin, Chairman, welcomed Mrs B rtrand Fox, 18 Ednewood Rd and Mr Martin A Gilman, 56 Bloomfield St , who were recently ap •oi rated to 3 Year terms on the Celebrations Committee by the Do r1 of Selectmen Mr Cole, rerre enting the Men° s Club of the U N DAY Church of the Redeemer, reque ted information as tc the availability of speakers abouo the United Nations for orvani.zatio is such as the Men a Club (He was referred to tie United Nations ' Council in Boston which has a Speakers' list ) United N tions Essay Contest Mrs Pullen reported th t Dr William Way, Youth Chairman of the Lexin,'ton Rotary Club, had e -pressed tc her the Rotary Club's intention to underwrite the entire cost of the prize trip to the United Nations in New York for the 2 Essay Contest winners and their chaperones VOTED That the Rotary Club be informed that the Committee accepts its offer for sponsoring and under- writing the expenses of the prize trip to t'-e United Nations for the 2 students, who win the United Nations Essay Contest, and their 2 chaperones Lura Wilson reported that the United N tions Essay Contest for 1960 will be writtei on October U•, on tie subject , "United Nations Achievements in Securing Peace, " Miss Helen McIntyre, the High ''chool teacher in charge of the contest, will turn the essays over to the L 4k .V (Mrs Wilson) , who will give them to the judges, who will be selected by the L W V VOTED That Miss McIntyre be authorized to spend up t50 of Celebrations Committee funds for United Nations material 330 Mr Cobb will check on arrangements for. the -, United Nations ' Day Assembly program at the High School He stated th=at the school would prefer that the assembly be held near the end of the school day perhaps , at 1 30 p m (Mr Douglass will invite Mr John Hinchliffe, President of the Rotary Club, to be present at the High School assembly ) United. Nations ' Day Tree Planting Miss Maxfield, Principal of Parker School, has been advised that the 1960 tree-planting ceremony will be held at Parker School on United Nations ' Day, October 24, and that an appropriate pror'ram should be planned for the early part of the morning Mr Howard inquired as to the possibility of the tree ' s being furnished ty a private organization, such as the Junior Chamber of Commerce , which would like to participate in the observance of United Nations ' Day in some way The tree has heretofore been furnished by Le dnigton's Park Department (Mrs Litchfield will speak to Mr Mazerali of the Park Department about this possibility ) United Nations ' Day Publicity: Publicity for United Nations ' Day has been planned The League of Women Voters will handle publicity about the Essay Contest, and Mrs Fox will prepare publicity about other phases of the observance THANKS- The Lexington High School Auditorium has been re- GIVING served by Mr Cobb for the fourth annual Thanksgiving Community Service on November 20, 1960 from 7 30 until o 30 p m Mr Cobb will speak to Mrs Sandberger, Director of Music for the High School, and he will invite the A Capella Choir of the High School to sing The choice of an anthem will be left to Mrs Sandberaer Mr Homsrd had prepared a letter which will be sent to clergymen who are being invited to participate this year Their order of participation in the service is determined by rotation of the 3 Faiths, and rotation of the Protestant clergymen according to the length of their stay in Lexington Mrs Litchfield will write to Mrs Mercy, Chair- man of the Board of Selectmen, and will request that she read the Governor's Proclamation at the Thanksgiving Service, Ushers will be supplied by the Council of Churches Flowers should be ordered for the podium and for the speaker' s wife 331 Speaker : Mr Howard was authorized by the Committee to invite Dr Jacobs , President of Trinity College, to be the speaker. He would be expected to rive a message, appropriate to the Thanksgiving Season, of bout 20 minutes in length It has been a policy of the Com- mittee to try to avoid having practicing clergymen as speakers (Dean Graham of Boston University had in- dicated last year that he would, be the speaker for. the 1060 Thanksrriviim Service, but has since moved out of the area ) Mr. Gilman brought up the subject of an offer of an honorarium to the speaker but the Committee felt that t- is should not be done Because of the success of th' luncheon last APRIL. 19 year, the Committee agreed that the Battlegreen Inn Dining Room should be reserved immediately for the April 19, 1961 luncheon Budget : Mrs Litchfield outlined Celebretioss Committee TSCEL- expenditures for 1059-1960 and it was decided that ;;,40no LAVROUS would be a reasonable amou: rt to request of Town Meeting for the huda t of the Committee for 1960-19(1 Stationery It was the consensus of the meeting that Committee members ' names should be omitted from the le terhead of t e Town Celebrations Committee stationery Thereby, the necessity of reordering new stationery each time Committee personnel changes would be eliminated.
