HomeMy WebLinkAbout1960-02-11-TCC-min.pdf 293 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE r— February 11, 1960 The seventeenth meeting of the 1950-'60 Town Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen' s Room of the Town Office Building at 3 00 p m Present were Mrs Pullen, Firs Williams, Mrs Litchfield and Messrs Cole, Cobb, Cronin, Douglass and Bongiorno Also present were Mr William Fitzgerald, Fire Com- missioner of Lexington and Mr Raymond Lewis, former member of the Town Celebrations Committee Fire Department : After a discussion with Mr Fitz- APRIL 19 gerald about the Fire Department' s plans for partici- pation in the 1960 parade, Mr Cole suggested that, perhaps, a Fifth Division of the parade should be established for Fire Department equipment and personnel exclusively (Antique automobiles would be in the Fourth Division ) 1 Mr Fitzgerald will submit Fire Department participation plans to the Committee at his earliest convenience 2 The Boston Fire Department Band will pro- bably participate 9 The Celebrations Committee will subsidize the Fire Department ' s hosting expenses in the same amount as 1959 Important Guests : Mrs Litchfield will begin sending letters to all the dignitaries 1 Senator Kennedy has sent a telegram of regret that he will be unable to be in Lexington on April 19 2 Arthur Bernon Turtelot, author of "William Diamond's Drum" , hopes to be present in Lexington on April 19 ,j it was sux'gestea tna ueneral Harmon, Norwlcn University Read , be sent an invitation to participate in the parade Bands and Var. ching Units : Mrs Litchfield read a list of bands which have sent acceptances and regrets 1 A letter will be sent to St Mary's Annuncia- tors Band of Cambridge inviting it to participate and offering a donation of .";'f100 plus transportation 2 A letter will be sent to Mr Frank Currier, Churchill Lane asking that he organize the Norwich alumni who are residents or Lexington to form a unit to march in the parade in the proximity of the Norwich Band 294 Lady Lexington: Mrs Pullen reported that the Prom- Manaders Birthday Ball will be held, March 1Q At that time the Prom-Manader's Queen will be chosen She will be "Lady Lexington" for 1960, also Booklet (An account of the celebrations of April 19 from 1776 to 1960 ) 1 Mrs. Pullen and Mr Cobb have had a clean copy typewritten They have chosen the type and will make a word count The Booklet should go to the printer this week 2 Mr Cronin felt that extra copies of the booklet should be purchased at this time, and felt that 8000 instead on the planned 7000 should be ordered (The Committee voted to order the additional thousand which should be put in reserve when delivered for use in future years as souvenirs, etc ) 3 Mr Cole had discussed with Town Counsel, Harold Stevens, the advisability of havinm the booklet copyrighted (He had indicated that it was not neces- sary ) Souvenirs VOTED that the Celebrations Committee pur- chase three dozen Paul Revere linen dish towels for souvenirs which would be riven to the ladies attend- ing the luncheon for honored guests on Patriots' Day 1-2-7-5 Signal A letter will be sent to the Fire De- partment requesting that the 1-7-7-5 signal be blown at 6 00 a m on April 19 Suggestions Mr Raymond Lewis suggested that each year a prominent citizen might be named as Honorary Grand Marshal of the parade It was suggested that the re- cipient of the Lions Club white tricorne hat might be an appropriate person to be so honored Floats : Mr Bongiorno reported that Mr Robert Cus- tance. President of the Chamber of Commerce, will send rules for float entrants to Mr Bongiorno next week Float entry blanks will be mailed to all prospective float entrants Mr Bongiorno will bring before the Chamber of Commerce the matter of some organization' s feeling that there is unfairness in the competition in the Youth Category floats He will ask whether or not there could be some recognition given to floats which are made by a youth group entirely by themselves and with little adult supervision or financial help t J 295 1 Mrs Litchfield and Mrs Williams outlined. plans for a dinner honoring Mr Bertram Gustin, former Chairman of the Town Celebrations Committee The dinner will be given by the Committee et the home of Mrs Sidney Wil- liams, 196 Follen Rd At this time, a book will be presented to Mr Gustin by the Committee members in appreciation of his many years of service to the Town Celebrations Committee 2 Chief of Police, Rycroft, will be invited to the February 18th meeting 3 Representatives of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Lexington Minute Men will be invited to the March 3 meeting 4 Mr Cole announced that the Appropriations Committee had approved a budget of ls4500 00 for the Town Celebra- tions Committee for 1960-'61 This will be voted on at the Town Meeting in March This amount does not include the Leroy Brown Fund which is available for Committee use 5 Dr F C McDonald of the Concord Celebration Com- mittee has informed Mrs Litchfield that Concord' s parade will be held in the morning of April 19 Therefore, the U.S Navy Band will be able to partici- pate in both parades Concord will share the expense of transportation and food for the Navy Band with Lex- _nmton 6 Mrs Litchfield read a poem entitled "The Minute Man Speaks" which was written by Norton Tuttle Hood, a 1 Lexington resident (Mrs Pullen will find out whether or not the poem might be printed in the special Spring issue of the Lexington Minute-Man newspaper Georgia H Williams, Recording Secretary 1 1 296
