HomeMy WebLinkAbout1960-02-04-TCC-min.pdf 289 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE February 4, 1960 The sixteenth meeting of the 1959-'60 Town Celebrations Committee was held in the Conference Room of Cary Memorial Hall at 8 00 p m Present were : Mrs Pullen, Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Williams, and Messrs Cole , Cobb, Cronin, Howard and Douglass Present also were Mr Bertram Gustin, former Chair- man, Town Celebrations Committee Mr Paul B. Lloyd and Mr Sam Barella, 4-H Horse Club; Mr Robert Bittenbender, Boy Scouts ; Mr Burton Skinner, Hayden Recreational Center Mr Nick Iodice and Mr Glenn, 4-H Town Committee and Mr Gerald Tabel.ing, Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls Mr Cole, Chairman, announced that Mr Neil APRIL 19 Cronin will be Marshal of the morning parade He reviewed the morning parade prop-ram The representatives of the organizations gave the following reports : 1 Hayden Center expects to have 4 drummers unless the noise will interfere with a band (It was suggested that a good position in the parade for Hayden Center would be following the Girl Scouts ) 2 Blue Birds (64 girls) and Camp Fire (15 girls) will enter at Munroe 3 Boy Scouts---the Sea Scouts will put up the flag at the ceremony Mr Bittenbender will find out whether or not the Explorer Scouts might carry a flag down the parade route as was done for many years He will also ascertain whether or not a Boy Scout Band is ATTR i l ahl a _ 4 4-H may participate in the morning parade, and will have a float in the afternoon (The 4-H members feel that there should be more definite rules for floats concerning amount of money which can be spent and amount of adult supervision and help ) 5 4-H Horse Club may participate in the after- noon with as many as twenty horses (The Lexington 4-H Horse Club is covered by insurance and will not be responsible for an out-of-town 4-H Horse Club ) Mr Cole requested that names of children who will give the oaths and promises for their organiza- tions be submitted as coon as possible so that they may be included in the printed program Mr Gustin offered the following suggestions 290 1 That Hayden Center undertake some of the hosting obligation for entertaining groups which will not be entertained at the high school and which are too young to be conveniently entertained by their sponsoring organization (Mr Skinner stated that Hayden Center would be made available for that purpose provided that some adults would be available for assistance and supervision ) 2 That the Sixth Grade Grammar School Drill Corps should bfr reactivated and that it should be modeled on the idea of the original 77 Minute Men 3 That the Norwich University Alumni in Lex- ington be organized to march with the Norwich Band in the parade, and that a three star General, alumnus of Norwich be invited here for the occasion (Mr Cole remarked that a Lieutenant General should be at the head of the parade and, therefore , could not march with the Norwich Unit ) Mr Gustin had received a letter from the rum and Bugle Corps of Our Lady of Lourdes, Jamcica Plain They would like to participate in the parade (The letter was turned over to Mr Cole ) Luncheon Committee (Mrs Litchfield and Mrs Williams) reported that the 3 Lexington Restaurants which were being considered for the Patriots ' Day luncheon had been visited and menus and price lists had been obtained I The Carriage House An upstairs room which should be large enough for the expe ted 60 people is under construction and they hope it will be completed by April 19 2 Lexington Inn: The least expensive lunch would be 42 75 per person 2 Battle Green Restaurant : The number of people could be accommodated by setting up screens 1 adjacent to the room with the folding partition A complete lunch could be served for ,b2 00 or less (The accessibility of location and convenience of parking were noted ) Automobiles for Dignitaries Mr Douglass will contact Lexington automobile dealers concerning their contribu- tion of convertible automobiles for transporting digni- taries from the luncheon to the parade and to the re- t ception after the parade (One car should be available for transporting recipients of the Lions Club white tricorne hats Mr Garrity, Mr Maloney, Mr Handley and Dr Piper ) BANDS The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Band requests an opportunity to participate in the parade and will accept a donation of 40100 which was the amount 1 which they were given in 1959 (Mrs Titchfield will write a letter to explain that because of budget limita- tions this year, we may not be able to offer as much as in previous years ) 291 Yatr, ots ' Day Suggestions (Mrs Pullen) l That the Lexington Historical Society might 5 be asked to show its films of the 1915 pageant on the Sunday night before Patriots ' Day. (A letter will be sent to the Historical Society ) 2 That the Knights of Columbus might have an Easter Monday Dance (Mr Douglass will ascertain whether or not the Rotary Club plans to have a dance. ) 3 That there be a High School Photography Club picture contest . (Mr Cobb has discussed this prospect with Marty Nason, President of the LH. 0 Photography Club, and the consensus was that the Photography Club is not enthusiastic about a contest this year He will discuss the matter with her again ) 1 . At the January 28, 1960 Celebrations Committee MISCEL- meeting, Mr Cole appointed Mr Howard to be in charge LANEOUS of Decorations , Reviewing Stand and Amplifying System for April 19, 1960. 2 A letter was received from the Board of Selectmen concerning the proposed proc,ram for the celebration of the 1n0th anniversary of the Civil War, and asking whether or not the Celebrations Com- mittee .>nld be interested in working with the Boston Civil War Centennial Commission ( Charles Hodges , Chairman) . (Mr Howard suggested that there be some publicity in Lexingtor about the existence of the Com- mission and if there is some response From interested. citizens, the Selectmen could be notified of this, and perhaps , the Se' ectre night appoint a. separate Civil War Centinnial.
