TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
Janaury 14, 1960
The thirteenth meeting of the 1959-'60 Town Cele-
brations Committee was held in the Selectmen' s Room of
the Town Office Building at 8 nO p m Present were :
Mrs Pullen, Litchfield„ Williams and Messrs Cole, Cobb,
Cronin, Howard , Bongiorno Present also were repre-
sentatives of various organizations of Lexington
Mr Cole , Chairman, explained the function of
the Committee and introduced present members and 3
former members, Mr Bertram Gustin, Mr Bentley
Hutchins and Mr Joseph Rooney to those present
1960 Theme : "Freedom With Justice" was an-
nounced as the theme chosen for this year
Floats : Mr Bongiorno passed around a list for
organizations which plan to enter a float to sign
Mr Cole asked each organiza`ion representative
to give comments and suggestions and to report on his
organization' s plans for Patriots ' day
1 American Legion (Mr Howard Rycroft and Mr
Mel Hunt) reported that invitations will be sent to
about 40 Posts of the Legion Representatives will
attend a later meeting of the Committee to work out
details of the Stanley Hill Post ' s being host to the
visiting Legionaires
2 Hayden Recreation Center (Mr Skinner) will
enter a float and will have more marchers in the
parade and possibly will have an electric organ
3 Grange and 4-H (Mr John Garrity) observing
4 Grotto (Mr Worth) will have miniature
float, 4• hoboes and a swing band with the trend to-
ward humor
5 Temple Isaiah (Mrs Plain) will enter a float
6 PTA Council (Mr Collins) Representative
will take back to the Council the message that adult
interest and assistance would be helpful to the Student
Council or other student group which will be in charge
of entertaining visiting High School bands Guides
should be stationed at the end of the parade to extend
invitations and direct the way to the High School The
High School parking lot might be restricted to the
parking of High School band buses

7 League of Women Voters (Mrs Fernberger)
plans to utilize the "Get out the Vote" idea since
the parade comes before the Primary Sixty to seventy-
five foreign students will be guests in the homes of
League members for the day
2 Junior Chamber of Commerce (Mr Nowell ) will
have a refreshment booth and possibly a float
9 Baptist Youth Fellowship (Mr John Jacobs )
plans to enter a float
10 V F W (David Toomey) observing.
11 Battle Green Chapter of DeMolay will have a
patrol both morning and afternoon
12 Girl Scouts (Mrs LaPorte) will march in
the morning Mrs LaPorte will inquire whether or not
the Old Scout Drum Corps is willing to participate
1i Mass Rescue Service will participate
14• Lexington Guides Association (James Connel,
William Bongiorno, Jr , and Eric Handley) presented a
mimeographed report of the Guides Association, copies
of which were passed around Outlined were suggestions
such as the Guides donating their services on Patriots '
Day by giving short talks at historical points of
interest on the Green inviting the author of "William
Diamond' s Drum" to come to Lexington as a guest of
honor for the day; a flag raising ceremony on the Green
with 77 men arranged in battle formation as were the
original 77 : and inviting "Revere" and "Dames" to
stay in Lexington for the afternoon and participate in
the parade (Mr Cole complimented the Guides on their
offering of their services for April 19 )
15 Lions' Club requested that a solution be
found for the congestion of traffic at the origin of
the parade
16 The Minute Men' s Organization representa-
tive extended a cordial invitation to the younger men
of Lexington to rive consideration to becoming members
of the Minute Men
Mr Cole mentioned that the Selectmen BOOKLET
had approved the publishing of the booklet in a longer
form than was originally planned, and had. authorized Mr
Cole to go before the Appropriations Committee to seek
additional funds in addition to Celebrations Committee
funds which will be used for the publishing
Mr Cole announced that material has been col-
lected by Mrs Pullen and Mr Cobb and is being com-
piled for a booklet which will be the only record of
the Patriots ' Day Celebrations from 1775 to the present
day, and t at the booklets should be ready for dis-

tribution before Patriots ' Day this year (The an-
nouncement was received with enthusiastic approval )
VOTED That the author of "William Diamond's
Drum" be invited to be a guest of honor in Lexington
on Patriots ' Day
Mr Cole will ascertain from the National NIOCrf -
Lancern organization whether or not the ride of r_ 4J'iOUO
"Revere" and "Dawes" is to take place again this year
Mrs Litchfield and Mrs Williams plan to
contact restaurants in January as to the possibility
of their providing the luncheon for visiting digni-
taries on Patriots ' Day
The official film of the 1959 Patriots ' Day
Parade will be kept by Mrs Litchfield along with
slides of the 1050 Celebration
It was noted that "FAITH IN FHE DOM" should be
recorded for future consideration as a Patriots" Day
theme
