TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
December 3, 1959
The eleventh meeting of the 1959-' 60 Town Cele-
brations Committee was held in the Selectmen' s Room of
the Town Office Building at 8 :00 p m Present were
Mrs Pullen, Williams, Litchfield and Messrs Cole, Cobb,
Cronin, Howard, Douzlass and Bongiorno Also present
were Mr Frank Bateman, Chairman of the Historical.
Heritage Committee of the Junior Chamber of Commerce
and William Bongiorno, Jr , Eric Handley, and James
Connel, members of the Lexington Guides Association
The Lexington Guides Association, a group of 7 APRIL 19
boys, licensed by the Board of Selectmen, who give
talks to visitors to Lexington about historical points
of interest, offered the following suggestions for
consideration by the Committee in connection with the
observance of Patriots' Day
1 That there be a band concert after the
parade
2 That the inscription on the monument be
read during the 11 :00 wreath-laying ceremony by the
D A R. and Minute Men
3 That after the wreath laying, the guides , on
the grand staid , would tell the story of the Battle of
Lexington
4 That the bell be rung when "Revere" comes
into town and the Minute Men would converge on the
Gre =n and raise a 11 star flag
5 That British representatives be invited to
decorate the gr ves of British soldiers (Scottish
bagpipers could be present )
6 Thnh there would be a large formal dance at
the High School gym to climax the activities of the
day, April 19th
Mr Cole commended the Guides on their interest
in Patriots ' Day, and on the job which they are doing
as guides He thanked them for the suggestions
The Historical Heritage Committee of the Jaycees
was formed for the purpose of making citizens of
Lexington aware of their town ' s historical heritage
Mr Bateman, Chairman, presented the following ideas
for consideration
1 That a series of tableaux floats depicting
the Hands of Freedom theme he planned

2 That Lexington' s history be promoted by mark-
ing boldly, but not distastefully, all historical
points of interest
3 That Guides be stationed at historical
points of interest during a period of time
4. That battle lines on the Green be promi-
nently marked
5 That attendants at Lexington' s historic
houses be dressed in costumes and conduct brief tours
of the interiors
6 That a study of past parades be made for the
purpose of reviving some of the best features of them
7 That a study of floats be made to discover
ideas which might be worth repeating
Mr Cole commended the Jaycees on their interest
in Patriots ' Day and on their continuing interest in
the town
THANKS- Voted: That a letter be sent to the Board of
GIVING Selectmen The letter should state the degree of suc-
cess which the Committee f-els it has attained during
the 3 years of planning the Community Thanksgiving
Service , and request that in the interest of better
planning that the Selectmen determine whether or not
this shall he a permanent function of the Committee
to be continued on a year to year basis
BOOKLET Mr Cole announced that the Selectmen had ap-
proved the History of Patriots ' Day Cal brations book-
let which is being compled by Mrs Pullen and Mr Cobb
of the Committee, as long as it is published within the
budget of the Celebrations Committee
Mrs Pullen reported on printers ' estimates for
7000 16-page booklets
Lexington P' ess (with printers on the premises)
gave an estimate of 1:700 nO with the booklet
estimated to be completed in 4• weeks
Barrett Press (sending the work out to be done)
gave an estimate of about x;700 00
(Mr Howard suggested that specifications be
sent to all town printers asking that they submit bids
for consideration by the Committee )
VOTED That in the interest of saving time, the
Lexington Press be employed to publish the booklet (8
ayes, 1 opposed, Howard)
VOTED That Mrs Pullen and Mr Cobb be given a
vote of confidence to proceed with their project and
that the quality of paper stock be decided by Mrs
Pullen and Mr Cobb

VOTED That Mrs Louise Baker, Stratham Rd , be
employed to typewrite the final draft of the booket
Mr Cole will consult Town Counsel, Harold Stevens ,
about ownership and copyright of the booklet.
Mr Cole recommended that the names of the
1959-60 Town Celebrations Committee be included in the
booklet
Mr Howard wondered whether or not a map and
tour guide (prepared by the Jaycees) could be included
in the booklet (The Committee felt that since it is
being published with town funds the map and guide could
not be included )
Representatives of various organizations of the town MISCEL-
will be invited to the January 14, 1960 meeting of the LANEOUS
Celebrations Committee to offer suggestions and outline
plans for Patriots' Day 1960
