HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-10-22-TCC-min.pdf 261 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE October 22, 1959 The sixth meeting of the 1059-'60 Town Celebra- tions Committee was held in the Selectmen' s Room of the Town Office Building at 8:00 p m. Present were : Mrs Williams and Messrs Cole, Cobb, Douglass and Howard Mr Cole welcomed Mr Kingston L Howard, 5 Gould Rd , who was recently appointed by the Selectmen to the Committee Mr Cobb outlined the Lexington High School U N Day U N Assembly program for Friday, October 23, as follows Student Chairman brief statment Mrs Lawrence Kipp, Chr of L W V. Foreign Policy Committee----"United Nations The Need for Understanding" Mr Otis Brown, President of the Lions Club. Presentation of U N. flag to Mr Manfred Warren, Principal Mrs Paul Riffin, President of the League of Women Voters "The League's Activities on Behalf of the United Nations " Mr William Maloney, President of Rotary Club. "Rotarians Support the United Nations Essay Contest. " Mr Lincoln Cole, Jr , Chairman of the Town Celebrations Committee Annnnnnamen+ of winners of Essay Contest Reading of essays by successful contestants Mr Cobb reported that in the future the Lions Club hopes to present a U N flag to the school which has a tree planted for U N Day observance, and to present flags to the schools which have had tree-planting ceremonies in the past Mr Augustus Young, Principal of Fiske School had sent a letter outlining the U.N program for Fiske School for October 23, as follows : Introduction Janet Williamson "World is Smaller Now. "---Choral Reading Grades V and VI Planting of tree---Elizabeth Chen and Howard Smith Gr I Song --- "Hail United Nations " --- Grades V and VI 262 (Mrs Litchfield will telephone the Lexington news photographer about taking pictures at the schools ) 1'Ir Howard expressed the hope that in the future the Lexington Junior Chamber of Commerce might partici- pate more actively in the observance of United Nations' Day THANKS- Mr Henry Clark, next in seniority of the Lex- GIVING inQton Protestant Clergy, will be written a letter by Mrs Litchfield asking him to give the Invocation at the Thanksgiving service in place of Mr Fisher, who will be out of town Mr Cole will attempt to secure as a speaker for the Thanksgiving service Dean Edward K Graham of the Boston University Graduate School For the musical portion of the Thanksgiving pro- gram, Mrs Sandberger had presented the following selections 1 "Bless the Lord, 0 My Soul "---Ippolitoff-Ivanoff L.H.S A Capella Choir 2 "Glorious Everlasting " Cousins LHS A Capella Choir Accompanist Edith Hathaway Organ Prelude Incidental Mrs Margaret H Sandberger APRIL 19 Ft Devens has placed the Committee invitation to participate in the Patriots Day parade on file and recommends that another request be made 45 days prior to April 19 High School Bands invitations should be sent out soon MISCEL- A letter was received from Mr Maloney, Chr of LANEOUS Board of Selectmen, which enclosed a letter from Mr Paul F Bartel, 3 Sunnyknoll Ave , Lexington, Mass Mr Bartel had submitted a proposal that there should be a contest with savings bonds as prizes for the best story written about the history behind historical places in Lexington He suggests that the winner could relate the story at the site of the story (A letter should go to Mr Bartel, thanking him for his interest, and informing him that he will be in- vited to a future meeting of the Committee to discuss his project ) 263 In this connection, Mr. Douglass mentioned that the Lexington Jaycees are planning a Historical Heri- tage Project (Mr Frank Bateman, Chr ) for the purpose • of developing more interest in the historical value of Lexington. Mr Douglass suggested that, perhaps, Mr Bateman, Mr Ralph Tucker, Pres of the Lexington Historical Society and others might be invited to such a meeting of the Committee. ) Mr Cole explained the background of the Town Celebra- tions Committee to the 2 new Committee members, Mr Howard. and Mr Douglass BUDGET The Committee gave approval to Mr Cole to present the Budget before the Board of Selectmen at its meeting next week as wa° approved by the Committee the previous week.
