TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
October 15, 1959
The fifth meeting of the 1959-' 60 Town Celebra-
tions Committee was held in the Selectmen's Room of the
Town Office Building at 8 :00 p m.
Present were Mrs Litchfield, Mrs Williams,
and Messrs, Cole, Cobb, Cronin, Bongiorno and Douglass
Mr Cronin, Vice-chairman, presided over the
meeting until the arrival of Mr Cole, Chairman, who
had been detained at another meeting
Mr Cronin welcomed Mr Arthur Douglass to the
meeting Mr Douglass and Mr Kingston Howard were
recently appointed to the Committee by the Board of
Selectmen, Mr Howard was unable to attend this meet-
ing because of another appointment
With the exception of a main speaker, all ar- THANKS-
rangements have been made for the Thanksgiving Service GIVING
A sample program will be made up by Mrs Litchfield
( She will bring it to the next Committee meeting so that
the program can be approved by the Committee It is
hoped that by that time the speaker' s name will be
available for inclusion in the program so that it may
be sent to the printer (The Committee awaits a reply
to an invitation which was sent to Nils Y Wessel,
President of Tufts College, to be the speaker )
The High School has been reserved for the
Thanksgiving Program from 7 :30 p m. until 9 30 p m on
November 22
.yrs Libchfield, Corresponding aecretiary, re-
ported that letters have been sent to the Lexington
clergymen informing them of the plans for the Thanks-
giving Service so that announcements may be made in the
churches
The Committee felt that an effort should be U.N Day
made to obtain a United Nations' flag which could be
used by the town on occasions such as the United
Nations ' Day programs in the schools (Mr Cobb tele-
phoned Mr Gustin who assured him that the Lexington
Lion' s Club would be pleased to present a U.N flag to
the High School at its U.N Assembly program at the
High School on Friday, October 23, at 10 45 a m )
Members of the Celebrations Committee were ur •ed by
�._ the Chairman to be present at this program and at the
tree-planting ceremony at Fiske School at 9 15 a m on
the same day

Mrs Litchfield and Mrs Williams, in the (-s
absence of Mrs Pullen, will prepare publicity about
the United Nations ' programs and about the U N Essay
Contest, its winners and their prize trip to New York
This will be sent to the Lexington Minute Man news-
paper In the article, Mr Joseph Gibson of the Social
Studies Department of the High School will be given
credit for his part in working out many details of the
Essay Contest
Requests as to the availability of U N
material for use in school programs had come to the
Committee from the Principals of Adams and Munroe
Schools They were referred to the U.N Bookshelf of
the Cary Memorial Library
APRIL 19 The subject of the purchase of additional rope
for the roping off of crowds in Lexington Center on
Patriots Day was discussed It was the sense of the
meeting that ,$200 of Committee funds night be used
for this purpose (Mr Cole will meet with Mr Gustin,
who purchased rope for the Committee last year for this
purpose Refer to Dec 11, 1958 minutes )
Letters have been sent by the Corresponding
Secretary to Norwich University, Fort Devens and to
the First Naval District inviting their bands and
marching units to participate in the 1960 Patriots
Day Parade
BUDGET After reviewing 1958 and 1959 budgets, the
Committee felt that a $4500 00 budget (the same as
1959) would adequately cover expenses of the Town
Celebrations Committee for 1960 The Committee will
submit this request before Town Meeting It was men-
tioned that Committee expenditures for bands and march-
ing units eere less this year than had been estimated
because of the rainy April 19th However, host ex-
penses were higher this year than had been estimated
because of additional youth groups having been brought
to town oy the American Legion
I MISCEL- Mrs Litchfield will order new stationery for
LANEOUS the Town Celebrations Committee The new members '
names will be included
Mrs Williams will mail a complete set of 1959-
' 60 minutes to Mr Howard
Mrs Litchfield gave E5 00 to Mrs Williams to
cover postal expenses of the Recording Secretary
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p m.
