TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
October 8, 1959
The fourth meeting of the 1959-'60 Town Celebra-
tion' s Committee was held in the Accountant's Office of
the Town Office Building at 8 :00 p.m Present were :
Mrs . Williams and Mrs Litchfield and Messrs Cole,
Cobb, Cronin, and Bongiorno.
Also present were Rabbi Herbert Rosenbloom of
the Jewish Community Center and Rabbi Bernard H Bloom
of Temple Isaiah.
Mr Cole, Chairman, discussed plans for the THANKS-
Lexington Community Thanksgiving Service which will be GIVING
held November 22, 1959 at 8 :00 p.m , at the Lexington
High School Auditorium He suggested that Rabbi Bloom
represent the Jewish faith on the program by reading
the scripture and by giving a prayer
Elder Myron C Fisher of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints will be asked to give the
Invocation, and Father George W Casey of St Brigid' s
i Church will be asked to give the Benediction (Since
neither Mr Fisher nor Father Casey attended this meet-
ing, Mrs Litchfield will telephone them. )
Mrs Litchfield read a letter from A. L Sachar,
President of Brandeis University, in which he expressed
his re 'ret that he would be unable to be the speaker
at the Thanksgiving Service (Mrs Litchfield will
invite Nils Y. Wessel, President of Tufts College to
be the speaker) .
Mrs Sandberger, director of the High School
GUe Clan, x.111 Jireeu Une moral group and sne will
also play the organ at the service
Mr Maloney, Chairman of the Board of Select-
men, will be asked to rend the Governor' s Proclamation
at the Thanksgiving Service (Mrs . Litchfield will
send a letter to him) .
Mrs. Litchfield and Mrs . Williams will prepare U N Day
publicity about United Nations ' Day for the Lexington
Minute Man newspaper
Mr Cobb reported that plans for the Fiske
School and High School United Nations ' Day programs
are set : Mr Augustus W. Young. Principal of Fiske
School, plans a U.N. tree-planting ceremony on Friday,

October 23, at 9:15 a.m The Park Department will send
personnel to Fiske School for planting the tree
The U N Day Assembly will be held at 10 :45 a m ,
October 23, at the Lexington High School Mr Lincoln
P Cole, Jr , Chairman of the Town Celebrations Commit-
tee; Mr Maloney, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen
and Mrs Paul Riffin, President of the Lexington
League of Women Voters will say a few words The
winners of the Essay Contest will be announced The
essays were written by approximately 50 high school
seniors at the school today
A letter will be sent to Mr Mason of the Cary
Memorial Library, reminding him of United Nations' Day,
October 24th, and reminding him of the United Nations'
Bookshelf which should be on display during United
Nations ' Week.
The Men' s Club of the Episcopal Church will
have an October United Nations ' program as a result
of the letter which was sent to all organizations from
the Celebrations Committee last Spring
The Jewish Community Center will invite eleven
or twelve foreign students to Lexington for the weekend
of October 30 There will be a social evening at the
Jewish Center on October 31, at 8 :30 p m A letter was
received from Mr Arnold Miller of 33 Young St , in-
viting the Celebrations Committee members and their
wives and husbands to attend (Mrs. Litchfield will
reply to Mr Miller's letter explaining that several
members of the Committee plan to attend)
APRIL 19 Mrs Litchfield will send letters of invitation
to bands to participate in the April 19, 1960 parade
MISCEL- Mrs Williams presented Mrs Louise Baker's bill
LANEOUS for $25 00 for typewriting minutes from 1955 to 1959 in
the official record book of the Town Celebrations Com-
mittee
Mr Cole announced the Selectmen's appointment
of Mr Kingston Howard as a member of the Town Celebra-
tions Committee An article will be sent to the
Minute Man newspaper about this appointment and about
Mr Cole' s recent election as Chairman of the Committee
Mrs Litchfield reported that Mrs Cheever is
unable to do mimeographing work for the Committee as
she now has a full-time teaching position
The next meeting will be held on October 15th
at 8:00 p m
