HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-09-15-TCC-min.pdf 249 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE September 15, 1959 The first meeting of the 1959-60 Town Celebra- tions Committee was held in the Conference Room of Cary Memorial Hall at 8x00 p m Mr Gustin, Chairman, announced that the Board of Selectmen had accepted his resignation from the Town Celebrations Committee and that it was now in order for a new Chairman to be elected He also announced that T C. C. expenditures to date total 83318 73. Mrs Litchfield nominated Lincoln P Cole, Jr as Chairman. VOTED unanimously. Mr Cole was not present If he accepts, the Board of Selectmen will be notified of his election. Mr Cronin was elected as Chairman for this meeting 1 Superintendent of Schools, Medill Bair, U N Day had written a letter expressing his approval of a tree- planting ceremony at Fiske School, on Friday, October twenty-third, United Nations Day A letter will be written to Fiske School suggesting that a suitable place be chosen there for the planting of the tree, and that the type of tree be decided upon so that the Park Department can be notified and a suitable tree can be chosen The plaque for the 1959 tree is al- ready in the possession of the Town Celebrations Com- mittee (Mrs Litchfield and Mrs Williams will visit the Fiske School principal to discuss the program ) 2 Miss McIntyre of the High School has asked whether or not she might expect a donation from Town Celebrations Committee funds for acquiring United Nations material for use in her class and for the United Nation's Essay Contest VOTED The Committee will underwrite the ex- penditure of us to fifty dollars for the United Nation' s material 3 Mrs Kaufman of the League of Women Voters has reported to Mrs Pullen that United Nation' s Essay Contest judges have been chosen by the L W V. The winning essays will be brought to the High Schhol stage during the United Nation's Day assembly and Mrs L_ 250 Riffin, President of the League of Women Voters will say a few words . The L.W.V. has, also, offered to do all publicity in connection with the Essay Contest if re- quested (Mr Cobb willtspeak to Mrs. Kaufman about it. ) 4 Mr Cobb will inuire of Mr Maloney, Presi- dent of the Rotary Club, as to the Club' s willingness to assume leadership of the United Nation' s Essay Con- test prize as it has done in the past, and, whether or not, other organizations which have contributed toward the prize in the past should be ziven an opportunity to do so again. (It was mentioned that this might stimu- late more townwide interest in the Contest ) Mr Cobb will extend an invitation to Rotary and other interested organizations to send representa- tives to a Celebrations Committee meeting, if they wish Thanks- J S. Bixler, President of Colby College, sent giving a letter of regret that he is unable to be the speaker at Lexington's Thanksgiving service APRIL 19 1 Mrs Pullen and Mr Cobb produced a file which catalogs information about April 19th celebrations since 1776 The file is the result of Mrs. Pullen' s and Mr. Cobb' s research this summer in libraries in Boston, Concord, and Lexington. There was discussion as to the possibility of publishing a booklet with some of the in- formation about past April 19th celebrations in 1960. One printer had estimated the cost at about 4600.00 for printing 7000 sixteen page booklets containing about 8000 words . Mr Gustin suggested that the Committee should keep the file, and that representatives from the Com- mittee should go before the Board of Selectmen with a specific plan for a booklet. (An appointment with the Selectmen will be requested for November 2d. ) 2 The suggestion was made that a letter should be written to the Postmaster General of the United States recommending that 1975 be earmarked for the re- issue of 3 stamps which commemorate the Battle of Lex- ington which were issued in 1925. It was recommended that the date be changed from 1925 to 1975. 3 Liaison with Concord, Mass should be developed in connection with April 19th celebrations. 4 A sub-committee should work on April 19th traffic problems. Two suggestions for alleviating traffic congestion were a longer parade route (perhaps l_. 251 from the Arlington line) and shuttle bus service ( operating from outlying parking lots to town 1 Mrs Litchfield asked for schedules of future Town Celebrations Committee meetings so that MISCEL- Thursday nights may be reserved through Miss Murray, LANEOUS Secretary for the Board of Selectmen (Mr Carroll, Town Clerk, had been notified of this meeting ) 2 Mr Tustin explained bookkeeping procedures to Mrs Litchfield. Corresponding Secretary He recommended that s"75.00 be withdrawn from Town Cele- brations Co-mmittee funds for Mrs Litchfield to use in connection with incidental expenses of Committee members. 3 Mrs Louise Baker, Stratham Rd , has been typewriting T C.C. Minutes for an official binder Mrs Williams will inquire whether or not they are completed After setting Thursday, September 24, as the date for the next meeting, the meeting was adjourned.
