TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE

The twenty-eighth. meeting of the 1958-59 Town
Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen' s
Room, Town Office Building on May 14, 1959 at 8 00
p m Present were Messrs Gustin, Hutchins, Cronin,
Cole, Cobb ; Mesdames Pullen, Litchfield and a
Also present were Mr and Mrs Mark Bortman
Mr Bortman, Chairman, Boston National Historic
Sites Commission, presented to the Celebrations Com- MR MARK
mittee pictures which. he had taken of the 1959 Patriots ' BORTMAN
Day Parade and literature about People to People pro-
gram.
Mr Gustin made a presentation of Certificates
of Birth. for Americans and Liberty Bills to Mr Bortman
and tricorne hats to Mr and Mrs Bortman Mr Bortman
expressed a particular interest in tb.e Certificates of
Birth. and was delighted that he will be given a suf-
ficient quantity to take to Berlin, Germany in June, to
enable him to present one to each of the thousand dele-
gates at the International Mayor' s Conference (Mr
Gustin will deliver 1000 certificates in envelopes to
Mr Bortman' s office this month. )
Mr BorLiran stated that he hopes that the classic
simplicity and dignity and the genuine patriotism of the
Lexington Patriots ' Day Celebration. 1960 might be cap-
tured. in a recording and broadcast over the "Voice of
America"

Mr Bortman contributed the following ideas for
Patriots ' Day celebrations ( 1) That there be an over-
seas affiliation in 1960, such as a tie-in with the town
of Laxon in England from which the name "Lexington" may
have been derived ( 2) That a major statesman , such. as
Secretary of State Herter, be invited to be the honored
guest and to make a speech on. Patriots ' Day 1960 ( 3 )
That, eventually, the graves of the British soldiers in
Lexington be appropriately marked ( 4) That the towns
which celebrate Patriots ' Day work toward the time when 1
they will celebrate the occasion together
Mrs Pullen, Cobb and Mr Jonathan Swan were MISCEL-
judges for the High. School Photography Club contest LANEOUS

There were about one hundred entries
VOTE It was voted that the Committee send 585 00 to the Minute
Men toward their Patriots ' Day expenses
The League of Women Voters ' U N Day Chairman will
be invited to the May twenty-eighth meeting
VOTE It was voted that 10,000 Liberty Bills be printed
VOTE It was voted at the May 7, 1959 meeting that Mr
Cobb be named Chairman of U N Day 1959
