HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-04-02-TCC-min.pdf 22.1 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE April 2, 1959 The twenty- second meeting of the Town Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen's Room of the Town Office Building on April 2, 1959 at B 00 p.m Present were Messrs Gustin, Hutchins, Bongiorno, Cole, Cronin; Mesdames Pullen, Litchfield and Williams Also present were Mr. Raymond Lewis and Mrs Wilbur Cheever, former members of the Town Celebrations Committee Mr Hutchins was authorized by the Committee to invite Major General Reginald A Maurer, former Command- MR GUSTIN 'f ing General of the Massachusetts National Guard, to Lex- REPORT ington for Patriot' s Day He will be invited in addi- tion to Major General Wooten of Fort Devens Mr Clark, General Manager of the Lexington Inn, regrets that the Lexington Patriot' s Day luncheon and reception are not being held at his establishment this year, and he hopes that the Committee will consider using the facilities of the Lexington Inn next year The Board of Selectmen sent a letter to Mr Gustin concerning the visit to Lexington of twenty-five to thirty members of the United Nations Secretariat The Selectmen desire to know whether or not the Celebrations Committee, on a voluntary basis , would like to make plans for the visit ( The Committee will express to the Selectmen the consensus of the Committee meeting that the Secretariat visit comes at an unfortunate time of the year It is difficult for the Celebrations Committee to assume any responsibility other than Patriot' s Day in the Spring of the year ) The Everett Huskies Athletic Association has re- quested an invitationto participate in the parade and request payment of transportation ( They will be in- formed that the Committee has a policy of paying no trans- portation expenses for marching units, and the Huskies may participate on that basis ) The Lexington Fire Department has had acceptances from the following towns which will send equipment, and the following fire chiefs will be in the parade Arlington, Chief Egan Hanscom Air Base, Chief Gallagher Bedford Somerville, Chief O'Hara l Belmont, Chief Crowley Waltham, Chief Steed 222 Boston, Chief Driscoll Watertown , Chief McElroy Burlington, Chief Crawford Winchester, Chief Callahan Cambridge, Chief White The Celebrations Committee will appropriate 8100 VOTE ( the same amount io' 1050) to the Lexington Fire Department toward its expenses in providing refreshments for the visiting firemen after the parade Mr Gustin reported for Mr Cobb that the contest PHOTOGRAPHY is under way David Vogt of the club is taking on the CLUB project of making a movie of the parade (Mr Cobb will CONTEST be asked to investigate the cost of 16 mm colored movie film and the processing of sane for filming a permanent record for the Committee of events in connection with Patriot' s Day 1959 This film could be kept in Cary Memorial Library ) Mr Cole reviewed the parade formation. He appointed Mr Cornelius Cronin as Chief of Staff of the afternoon parade Mr Cronin passed around alist of Lexington boys AFTERN00N who gave their lives in World War II and suggested that PARADE there be several cars of Gold Star Mothers in the parade (Mrs Litchfield will look into the matter ) Eleven ladies of the Policewoments Association will march in the parade Rex Trailer, television star, will not participate A letter of regret was received from the Comman- dant of the First Naval District (Mrs Litchfield will write a letter to him to ask him to send someone else to represent the installation. She will mention the Com- mittee policy of inviting the commandant or a represen- tive of eachnearby military installation to participate in the parade each year ) The Lions Club has asked Hiss Thoren ( "Lady Lex- LADY ington" - 1959" ) to make the awards for the Lions Club LEXINGTON Slide Contest "Lady Lexington" will be introduced to the audi- ence at the Friday night performance of the Theatre Guild play, "The Contrast ' ( Prom-Manaders will usher for all three performances ) The 1958 Lady Lexington photographic portrait is being framed by the Malcolm Stevens Co of Arlington The charge is less than ten dollars Mrs Pullen ordered two brass plaques, at S5 00 each, for the 1958 and 1959 L "Lady Lexington" portraits ( The Committee authorized 223 4-2-59 -2- Mrs 2-Mrs Pullen to have Peter Zitso make a photographic portrait of "Lady Lexington. - 1959") Mr Raymond Lewis reported that plans for the afternoon reception are complete MISCEL- LANEOUS Mr Bongiorno will store the Celebration' s Com- mittee felt arm bands at Craft Cleansers free of charge Mrs Litchfield and Mrs Williams will arrange to meet with the caterer, Mrs Marie Muse (MO 3-2006) to plan the luncheon menu Georgie Williams Recording Secretary 224
