TOWN CELEBRATION COMMITThE
March 26, 1959
The twenty-first meeting of the Town Celebrations
Committee was held in the Selectmen' s Room of the Town
Office Building on March 26, 1959 at 8 00 p.m Present
were Messrs Gustin, H utchins, Bongiorno, Cole, Cobb,
Cronin, Mesdames Pullen, Williams, and Litchfield
Also present were Mr Donald Guiler ( representing
the Lexington Minute Men) ; Mr Gerald Tabeling ( repre-
senting the Blue Birds of the Camp Fire Girls) ; Mr Leo
Gaughan ( representing the Veterans of Foreign Wars )
Mr Guiler reported that the Minute Men entertained
172 visiting members of the Centennial Legion last year LEXINGTON
and expect to entertain 75 this year MINUTE MEN
The Minute Men have traditionally greeted the
National Lancers ' riders when they arrive in Lexington,
and they plan to do so this year
VOTE The Committee voted to appropriate 575 .00
to the Minute Men, this year, toward their expenses in
providing a collation after the parade for visiting mem-
1 bers of the Centennial Legion, and an additional $10 00
for the expenses of providing lunch for the National
Lancers ' riders who impersonate the original "messengers"
of 1775
Thirty to fifty Blue Birds plan to participate BLUE BIRDS
Mr Cronin instructed them to assemble at the
Junior High School and he assigned to the Blue Birds a
position behind the Lexington High School band in the
morning—parade —
The following drill teams will participate in. the VETERANS
parade under the auspices of the V F W OF FOREIGN
WARS
1 The Most Blessed Sacrament ( 80 persons) sponsored by
the Malden V F W
2 The Waltham V F W Post No 2152 Boys ' Drill Team
3 The Isaac Wilson Taylor Drill Team, Cambridge V F W
Post No 2443
Mr Gaughan was authorized by the Committee to
invite an Arlington Marine Corps drill team and the Im-
maculate Conception Drill Team of Winchester which is
sponsored by the Woburn Post of the V F W

(Mr Cronin suggested that, in the future, organi-
zations should be asked to submit to the Committee lists
of prospective parade participants, the Committee should
decide whichof these units would best fit into the parade
and authorize organizations to invite those units to par-
ticipate )
Fifteen floats have been promised They are
FLOATS Youth 1 Troop 160, Boy Scouts of America
2 Willard Club of the Hayden Recreation Centre
3 Baptist Youth Fellowship
4 Minute Man Council of Girl Scouts
5 Y-Teens
6 Pilgrim Youth Fellowship
7 4-H Club

2 The Theater Guild of the Arts and Crafts Society
3 The League of Women Voters of Lexington
4 Lexington Lions ' Club
5 Lexington Knights of Columbus

1 Countryside Corners

3 Lexington Nursery
Arthur D Little , Inc declined the invitation to
enter a float this year
A letter from Mr Sheldon Kennedy of Trans-Sonics, Inc
stated that the company is unable to enter a float this year
Mrs Pullenvolunteered to meet with Martha Nason of
PUBLICITY the High School Photographers Club to plan publicity for the
Club ' s contest Mr Cobb reportedthat the start of the
contest awaits the completion of the mimeographing of entry
blanks
The Rotary Club will have a dance on April 18th Mrs
Pullen will find out from Mr MacNeil of the Rotary Club
whether or not they have plans for introducing "Lady Lexing-
ton" at the dance
Mr Cobb reported that he had completed the Lexington
portion of the Patriots Day program and Mr Gustin reported
that it had beensent to Boston Mrs Pullen hoped that there
would be extra copies of the program available for distribu-
tion
Mr Gustin asked Mrs Litchfield to send a letter of

invitation to the Reading High. School Band and Major-
ettes AFTERNOON
PARADE
Mrs Litchfield reported that the Girl Scout
Drum Corps of the Thirties plans to participate (Mr
Cobb was asked to reserve the Junior High. School gym-
nasium for its rehearsal, Sunday, April 19th, after
Mrs Lois Burnham Smith has been consulted as to the
exact time )
The M I T marching unit will not come
The Boston Fire Department Band sent a letter
of acceptance
Ten towns will each send one fire chief's car
and one piece of equipment
Reading will send a horse-drawn steamer, and
two hand tubs may, also, be in the parade
Mr Gustin read a letter from the Appropira-
tions Committee approving the appropriation by the MISCELLANEOUS
Town Meeting of $4000 plus 5500 from the LeRoy S
Brown Fund for Town Celebrations' Committee expenses
The 4-H Club has been notified that its riders
and horses must have proper identification insignia
Mr Cobb has suggested to the High School
Student Council that its after-parade reception be less
informal this year He suggested a receiving line and
a plan for giving souvenir certificates to each visitor
at the reception
VOTE The Committee voted that, for this year,
i,he High School Student uouncii will oe asicea to en-
tertain the Lexington Senior and Junior High. School
bands and all visiting youthgroups whichwill parti-
cipate in the parade
Mr Gustin mentioned a letter which he had re-
ceived from Mr William Page of Oakland Street which
requested various organizations to provide homes for
twenty-five or thirty visitors from the United Nation ' s
Secretariat who will be in Lexington for the weekend of
May 15th
