HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-03-15-TCC-min.pdf 209: TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE March 15, 1959 The nineteenth. meeting of the Town Celebrations Committee was held at the home of Mr Bertram Gustin, 50 Bloomfield Street, on Sunday afternoon at 3 30 p.m , March 15, 1959 Present were Messrs Gustin, Hutchins , Bongiorno, Cole, Cobb, Cronin; Mesdames Pullen, Williams and Litchfield Mr Cronin presented a gavel (which was made from the limb of a tree which had stood on Lexington Green) to Mr Gustin "in recognition of the splendid service which he has performed for the Committee and for the town " Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge declines, with re- gret, the invitation to come to Lexington on April 20th GUEST OF Major General G H Davidson, Superintendent of the U S HONOR Military Academy, West Point, will be asked. Major General Wooten of Fort Devens was also suggested 1 Mr Joe Tropeano will ask the Sea Scouts to raise the flag on the common. MORNING PARADE 2 Mr Lawrence Stone will play the bugle to the colors 3 Mr Cronin will ask the Park Department to have ropes in place on the Common 4 Names of children who will give oaths or pledges for their organizations must be available by April ,first for program printing 5 The- Selee-tme-n-and-Cle - y have oBeflnvltea to march The Clergy have been asked to have the church. bells ring 6 Children who would like to be in the parade but who are not members of a participatin„ orEafli..ati.r.1 may march. as a unit under the supervision of a member of the American Legion 7 A Red Cross first aid station wagon will be in the parade 1 Mr Lloyd of the. 4-H Horse Club will be noti- AFTERNOON fied that the 4-H Horse Club insignia must be large PARADE enough to be easily seen by the policemen 210 2 Rainbow would like to be in both parades Mrs Litchfield will inquire whether or not a Rainbow float is planned 3 The 18th U S Army Band of Ft Devens will send one hundred military personnel to participate 4 The Second Engineer Company of the Marines will send six or eight men 5 Mr Cole will name the Marshals and their Aides 6 The Navoy Restaurant will serve meals in two shifts, beginning at 11 30 a.m , to the two hun- dred military personnel (Norwich Univ , Army and Navy) having lunch there 1 Arthur D Little , Inc has been asked to enter FLOATS a bloat A reply from Mr Leroy Marek will be forth- coming 2 Raytheon ( through Mr Paul Hannah) will be asked to enter a float 3 The outline for an entry blank and set of rules for floats was drawn up by Mrs Pullen and Dr Crooke of the Chamber of Commerce The theme for the day, size of advertising signs, and rules for horse participation were included The Committee offered additional suggestions March. 25th as the final date for entry; assembly of floats at 11 00 a.m in East Lexing- ton; assembly of floats beside the Common on both sides of Massachusetts Avenue, from Harrington Road, after the parade for judging 4 Mr Bongiorno reported for Mr Otis Brown that the Chamber of Commerce will ask judges for floats 5 Mr Gustin regretted that in the Minute-man newspaper the caption beneatha picture of one of the Chamber of Commerce trophies was misleading and failed to give credit to the Chamber of Commerce whichcon- tributed the trophy Military Bands which definitely plan to partici- BANDS pate are 1 U S Army, Ft Devens--$l50 plus gasoline expense 2 Norwich. University - 200 plus $100 for meals 3 Navy ( 28 men) - 100 for transportation and H meals 211 2-15-59 -2- 4 Northeastern University--No fee 5 Tufts University --No fee High School Bands which definitely plan to participate are 1 Gloucester -- 110 plus S50 donation 2 Woburn -- 50 plus 25 transportation 3 Maynard 50 plus 35 transportation Athol -- 50 plus 50 transportation 5 Lexington Senior High -- 50 donation 6 Lexington Junior High --. 50 donation Miscellaneous Bands which plan to participate are 1 Salvation Army --850 plus $50 transportation 2 Clan MacPherson. --S165 3 Saugus DeMolay --$50 plus $70 transportation. 4 Boston Fire Department The Committee reviewed letters from five bands and marching units whichhave requested an invitation to par- ticipate After considering types of bands, experience, and fees requested, letters of invitation will be sent to the Ifollowing: 1 St Mary' s Annunciatiors of Cambridge who will be asked to come for the same contract as last year ( $100 plus trans- portation ) 2 The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War of Dorchester who will participate for $100 donation The Universal Decorating Company of Cambridge will be asked to decorate Cary Hall, the main reviewing stand, DECOR- the stand at the Captain Parker statue, the Morning ATING oaot-u.ide-standon-thc Gammen, the East-Lexington-Library and the East Lexington fire station Tickets will go on sale this week at $1 75 ( adult) THEATRE and 75 cents ( student) for the play, "The Contrast" GUILD Mr Cobb, after reading the play, "The Contrast", gave an interesting report to the Committee Mrs Pullen outlined a schedule of publicity for newspapers for each week until April 20th PUBLICITY Captain Bob of T V has another commitment for April 20th Rex Trailer of T V will be invited 212 The League of Women Voters sent a report on the United Nations Essay Contest for 1958 Mr Bongiorno extended an invitation to the Committee to be present for his installation as Com- mander of the V F W on April 9th In the form of a vote, the Committee expressed its appreciation to Mr Gustin and his family for re- freshments and souvenir miniature tricorn hats which. were presented to each Committee member The meeting adjourned at 6 30 p.m Georgia Williams Recording Secretary
