TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
February 12, 1959
The fifteenth meeting of the 1958-59 Town
Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen' s
Room of the Town Office Building on February 12,
1959 at 8 00 p.m Present were Messrs Gusfin,
Hutchins, Bongiorno, Cobb, Cole; Mesdames Williams,
Litchfield and Pullen
Also present were Mr Arthur Brock and Mr
Bashian representing the Lexington Minute Men; Mr
John Brucchi and Mr Leo Gaughan representing the
Lexington Post No 3007 Veterans of Foreign Wars
Mr Gustin, Chairman, welcomed Mr William APPOINTMENT
Bongiorno of 197 Waltham Street to the Celebrations
Committee He was appointed by the Selectmen to BONGIORMO
finish the term of Mr Joseph Rooney which expires
on March 31, 1961
Mr Brock reported that invitations to par-
ticipate in the parade will be sent to all units MINII'T
of the Centennial Legion When replies are re- MEN
ceived, the names will be given to the Committee
for the Parade Roster if the unit plans to partici-
pate Mr Brock felt that a seventy-five dollar
donation from the Celebrations Committee is a con-
servative amount toward the expense of providing a
collation after the parade for Centennial Legion
participants However, a large number of partici-
pants is not expected because of the celebration ' s
being nn n Mnnlny
Mr Gaughan felt that a seventy-five dollar
contribution from the Committee toward the after- V F W
parade entertainment expenses for the V F W is
adequate However, the V F W stated that it may
seek financial assistance from the Committee in
obtaining one good drum and bugle corps for the
parade (Mr Gustin asked that the commitment be
definite by March 15th and that the V F W drum
corps be a non-union band )
Mr John Brucchi expressed an interest in
locating the Civil War costumes for children which
were used in parades several years ago He volun-
teered to drill a dozen school boys, after school

hours, if at least a dozen costumes could be found
The V F W will inquire whether or not the
Student Council of Lexington High School would invite
the young people of the V F W drum corps to attend
the after-parade reception. for the high school bands
1 Mr Richard Velte of the Pilgrim Congregational
FLOATS Church has asked for information about and rules
for entering floats His church would like to
enter a float
2 Mrs Litchfield will ask Mr Robert Custance of the
Chamber of Commerce whether or not there is an entry
blank available for float entrants, and she will
inquire whether the Chamber of Commerce of the Com-
mittee should publicize this
3 March 5th. was set as the date for an open meeting
of the Committee with organizations which plan to
enter floats
1 Mr Cobb mentioned the possibility of the Lexington
PICTURE High School Camera Club' s being interested in or-
CONTEST ganizing an April 19th Picture Contest (Mr Cobb
will invite Martha Nason , President of the Camera
Club, to the next Committee meeting to discuss this )
2 Mrs Pullen had discussed the Lions Club Picture
Contest with Dr Willard Hunt who is in charge of it
He explained that the contest is concerned with.
slides only There is a fee of twenty-five cents for
each. slide entered The money will benefit the Lions
Club Eye Fund
3 Mrs Pullen expressed the hope that in future years,
perhaps, the Lions Club might work with the school
camera clubs in promoting a contest for pictures of
April 19th, and that there could be different cate-
gories for high school, junior high school, and
elementary school levels
4 Mrs Pullen asked Dr Hunt to consider the possibility
of. having "Lady Lexington" award prizes for the Lions
Club Contest this year
Mrs Pullen will publish the 1959 theme "Free-
PUBLICITY dom--U S A " She will inquire of The Boston Herald
whether or not there is a possibility of having a picture
of "Lady Lexington" in the rotogravure section of the
Herald on Sunday, April 19th

Bugle Corps of Cambridge had telephoned Mr Gustin
The Corps would like to participate in the parade COMMUNI-
for $150 00 plus transportation ( It was moved and CATIONS
seconded that this be tabled until replies from
other invitations have been received. )
A letter from the Lexington High. School
National Honor Society was received by Mr Gustin
The Society was asking for permission to have a
mobile food sale booth ( The letter was turned over
to Mr Cobb He will direct them to seek permission
from the Board of Selectmen )
The Aleppo Temple Band is unable to come
A request for "Birth Certificates" from a
student in Dalton, Mass was turned over to Mrs
Pullen
Mrs Lois Burnham Smith reported to Mrs
Litchfield that the "Girl Scout Drum Corps of the
Thirties" idea is being developed
Mrs Edith Nourse Rogers wrote a letter to Mr
Hutchins She regrets that the Army band will not
be able to come to Lexington She suggests, however,
that the Committee inquire as to the availability of
the U S Navy Band which is planning a tour of the
New England area during that period
Chief of Police Rycroft will be invited to
the February 29th Committee meeting
Mrs Williams will make a new roster of Cele-
brations Committee members
