TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
February 5, 1959
The fourteenth meeting of the 1958-59 Town
Celebrations Committee was held in the Conference
Room of Cary Memorial Hall on February 5, 1959 at
8 00 p m Present were Messrs Gustin, Hutchins,
Cronin, Cole, Cobb; Mesdames Pullen, Litchfield
and Williams
Also present were Mr and Mrs Skinner,
directors; Ken Palmer, president; Ricky Baptiste
and Marie Spinelli representing Prom-manaders;
Paul Downey and Nancy Baird representing Student
Council; Mr Marlin Whitney for Junior Chamber of
Commerce; and Mr Peter Oppenheim of "Peter' s
Music Store "
Mr Gustin read a letter from the Board of
Selectmen appointing Mr Cornelius Cronin, 1({. Utica APPOINTMENT
Street, to the Town Celebrations Committee to com-
plete the unexpired term of Mr Murray Dearborn Mr CRONIN
Cronin was welcomed to the Committee by Mr uustin

I Mr Whitney reported that the J C ' s have
discussed. aiding the Theater Guild with the ticket JUNIOR
sale for their play No decision yet They have CHAMBER OF
also discussed having a pageant to select a "Miss COMMERCE
Lexington" on the April 10-11 week-end
Mr Skinner stated that the Prom-Manaders
would welcome assistance from an adult group such PROM-MANADERS
as the Junior Chamber of Commerce March. 21st is
the date for the Prom-Manader's Birthday Ball Mr
Skinner--el-t thatthe-Prom-Manad would acocpt an
invitation from the Student Council to help with
the after-parade reception at the high. school Mrs
Skinner reported that two Hayden Recreational Center
groups would like to be in the parade The Baton
Twirlers would like to march in both parades An
Indian group would like to march in the morning
parade and to have a float in the afternoon parade
Mr Cole reported that Mr Dearborn will be
unable to assist the Committee in any way on April
20th. Mr Cronin was voted to replace Mr Dearborn
as marshal of the morning parade He will be
assisted by Mr Cole
Mr Raymond Lewis volunteered to be in charge

of the reception after the parade The Board of
Selectmen sent a letter acknowledging the resignation
of Joseph Rooney from the Town Celebrations Committee
( The Board of Selectmen has asked the Veterans of
Foreign Wars to submit several names from their organ-
ization from which a replacement for Mr Rooney might
be chosen )
Mr Hutchins reiterated the Committee policy that
BANDS bands whichparticipate in the Lexington parade are
offered donations to their music funds but we do not
pay anyone ( 1) The Clan MacPherson band will come to
Lexington for a donation of 6165 to their band fund
( The Committee voted to offer them the 516 ) ( 2) The
Mattatuck band is reportedly awaiting an invitation to
come to Lexington ( The Committee voted to send them
an invitation ) ( 3) Mrs Litchfield reported that the
Athol High School Band will come to Lexington ( h.) The
Committee voted to send a letter of invitation to the
Gardner High School Band (Mrs William Lloyd, Director )
Mrs Pullen mentioned a suggestion which she re-
PICTURES read in last year' s minutes It proposed a picture
contest in. which pictures of previous April 19th celebra-
tions would be submitted by Lexington townspeople to be
Judged (Mr Gustin noted that the Lexington Lions Club
is sponsoring a slide contest a week before April 19th
Dr William Hunt, Hancock Street, is in charge Perhaps
the April 19th idea could be incorporated into the Lions°
Club Contest )
A souvenir program for April 19th. was discussed
PROGRAM Mrs Pullen felt that it is too late to work up a proper
program for this year She is enthusiastic about the
idea for future celebrations
"Freedom--U S A " This theme ( suggested jointly
by Mrs Pullen and Mr Cobb) was voted by the Committee as
the best theme or slogan for the day, April 20, 1959
The Committee felt that a letter of appreciation should
be sent to Miss McIntyre of Lexington High School and her
class in World Problems for submitting themes which in-
spired the final choice
The Committee voted to send a letter of sympathy
for the death of his wife to Mr Donald Gillespie, Director
of the Lexington Junior and Senior High. School bands He
has been of great assistance to the Committee in securing
high. school bands to participate in previous parades
Mr Peter Oppenheim was thanked for bringing to
the meetig a new record of the "Midnight Ride of Paul Il
Revere" and equipment upon which to play it The Com-

mittee explained to him that it could in. no way promote
i the sale of a commercial record, however
Mr Gustin announced that the Board of Selectmen
has approved the Town. Celebrations Committee budget of
$4500
