HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-01-22-TCC-min.pdf 187 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE January 22, 1959 The twelfth meeting of the 1958-59 Town Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen ' s Room of the Town Office Building January 22, 1959 at 8 00 p.m Present were Messrs Gustin, Hutchins, Cole, Cobb; Mesdames Litchfield, and Williams Also present were Mr Kingston Howard, Presi- dent, and Mr Marlin Whitney, Mr Arthur Douglass, and Mr Louis Fischer representing Lexington Junior Chamber of Commerce; Mr Robert Custance representing Lexington Chamber of Commerce; and Mr James Marshall represent- ing Lexington Lions Club Mr Howard explained that the J C of C has JUNIOR considered having a 'Miss Lexington" pageant in con- CHAMBER nection with. the April 19th celebration It would OF perhaps consist of a Talent Contest (Friday night) COMMERCE Beauty Contest ( Saturday afternoon) and Coronation Ball ( Saturday night) at which finalists of the talent and beauty contests would give performances This would be culminated by having "Miss Lexington" ride on a decorative float in the parade on April 20th I Mr. Gustin outlined the origin of the "Lady Lexington" idea, and explained that the J C oc C plans would be in conflict with the Theater Guild play presentations and also would be in competition with the "Prom-Manaders " Lady Lexington contest Mr Cobb suggested that the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Prom-Manaders and the Theater Guild meet with the Town Celebrations Committee for discussion on February 5th. Mr Custance stated that the C of C inaugu- rated the awarding of prizes for best floats last year CHAMBER and will continue that this year Mr Gustin sug- OF gested that the C of C set up rules governing the COMMERCE entry of floats and select the judges Mr Custance mentioned that the Shriner' s Oriental Band is very colorful He will seek more information about it Mr Marshall stated that the Lions Club will conduct the road race, sell tri-corne hats, and will LIONS have a float The Lions Club will not be interested CLUB in helping withthe ticket sale for the Theater Guild play Mr Gustin announced that ( 1) March first is 188 the deadline for submitting program information to the Town Celebrations Committee; ( 2) March. fifteenth is the date by which. the parade roster ( bands, marchers, etc ) should be complete; ( 3) an invitation has been sent to the Shriner' s Band; ( 4) a letter has been sent to Gen- eral Gruenther; ( 5) The Lexington Inn, Carriage House and 1775 House restaurants will be contacted in con- nection with deciding on a location for the April 20th. luncheon (Mr. Seabury is no longer in the operating management of the Lexington Inn ) ( 6) Board of Selectmen sent letter telling of Mr Dearborn' s resig- nation from the Town Celebrations Committee; ( 7) Board of Selectmen sent letter denying approval for any kind of "gimmick" in connection with the program for April 19th; ( 8) two things should be considered ( a) decora- tions, (b) sound amplification Mrs Litchfield reported ( 1) Maynard High School band accepted invitation; ( 2) Tufts University has tele- phoned in connection with being invited to Lexington ; ( 3) the Air Force Cambridge Research Center will send a marching detail ( thirty men) for the parade; (4.) a letter was received from Mrs Edith Nourse Rogers to THEME Mr Cobb reported the following themes were sub- SUGGESTIONS mitted by Miss McIntyre ' s classes 1 Freedom Is Never Free 2 The Shot Heard 'Round the World 3 Courage Has Called Us Forth 4. Courage Started It Let No Man End It 5 Do Not Retreat from the Battlefield of Peace and Progress 6 Lexington , Model For America 7 What a Glorious Morning for America 8 American Without End 9 Where Liberty Dwells, There Is My Country 10 Know Your Town 11 Let Freedom Ring 12 Peace is Better Than a Place in History 13 Let Live and Help Live Mr Hutchins reported a letter from the North- eastern University Pershing Rifle Organization accepts the invitation to participate in the parade February 12th Discuss with the Legion, VFW, and Minute Men the possibility of their being hosts to visiting parade participants Next week The Student Council will meet with the Committee Georgia Williams Recording Secretary
