HomeMy WebLinkAbout1959-01-08-TCC-min.pdf 179 TOWN CELEBRATIONS CONNITTEE January 8, 1959 The tenth meeting of the 1958-59 Town Celebra- tions Committee was held in the Selectmen' s Room of the Town Office Building January 8, 1959 at 8 00 p.m Present were Messrs Gustin, Cobb, Cole, Hutchins; Mesdames Litchfield, Pullen and Williams Also present was Mr Ray Lewis, former member of the Committee Mr Gustin outlined the basic parade formula which consists of sixteen bands including eight high 19th OF APRIL school, four military, and four miscellaneous bands Mr Cobb reported that Mr Ray Duman, director of the Athol High School Band, had written that the Athol High School band would like t' participate in Lexington, April 19th Mrs Litchfield will write to Athol High School and formally invite the band to participate A fifty dollar donation, transportation charges and lunch will be offered to them Mr Cobb will inquire about the Gardner, Mass and the Belmont, Mass high school bands, also Mr Gustin asked Mr Hutchins to contact the Army Field Forces band and the Fort Devens band Mrs Litchfield will write to the Marines A letter should be written to the Salvation Army to find out whether they can send a band to Lexington Mr Lewis will write to the Clan MacPherson band Mr Gustin will continue negotiations with. the Shriners to have them send a band to Lexington Mr William Fitzgerald of the Lexington. Board of Fire Com- missioners will be asked to invite the Boston Fire De- partment to send a bang and apparatus ivtr cote win invite the Newport School Colonial band Miss McIntyre will have April 19th, themes ready by January 15th Mrs Biggs has reserved the high school audi- torium for April 17th and 18th. for the Theater Guild performance Mrs Biggs hopes for Historical Society cooperation in handling the ticket sale This week Mr Hutchins will try to see the Historical Society president about the matter Mr Hutchins has been unable to ascertain Gen- eral MacArthur' s interest in his being invited to Lex- ington General Gruenth.er, President of the American 180 Red Cross was suggested as a possible guest General Carlos Romulo was also suggested Mr Gustin suggested inviting the Governor of Alaska Mr Hutchins suggested inviting "Miss Massa- chusetts", Patricia Nordling of Lexington. Mrs Pullen will ask Mr Streeter Stuart for suggestions for a parade attraction for children, such as Big Brother or Captain Bob of WBZ-TV Mr Lewis suggested a theater ticket idea for the April 19th "gimmick" Mr Gustin reviewed Mr Cole' s suggestion of an insurance policy It was de- cided that we should select the theme before deciding on the "gimmick" Mr Gustin will contact the "Lexington Inn" about lunch for April 19th If it is not possible to have lunch there, he will contact the "Carriage House " The Committee discussed the formalizing of invi- tations for the reviewing stand The following schedule was set up for future meetings when representatives of groups participating in the parade will be invited January 15th 1 Youth Groups for the morning parade ( Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, C Y 0 , Demolay and Rainbow ) 2 The clergymen who will give the Invocation ( St Brigids) and the Benediction ( Grace Chapel) at the morning ceremony 3 Sam Barella of the L4-H Horse Group January 22nd 1 The Chamber of Commerce , the Junior Chamber of Com- merce and service club representatives January 29th. 1 The Student Council of the Lexington High School February 5th 1 The Prom-Manaders 181 1-8-59 -2- The following were given special mention in con- nection with being giv n invitations to participate on April 19th The Girl Scout drum and bugle corps of some years ago The Reading Majorette group Maynard High. School band Univ of Mass , ROTC marching unit Gloucester High School band Tufts R. 0 T C marching unit Northeastern R 0 T C band and marching unit Mansfield High School Band Melrose High. School band Needham High. School band Lexington Junior and Lexington Senior High.
