TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
October 18 , 1958
The fifth meeting of the 1958-59 Town Cele-
brations Committee was held in the Selectmen' s
Room of the Town Office Building at 8 00 p.m Pre-
sent were Messrs Gustin, Hutchins, Cole; Mesdames
Litchfield, Pullen and Williams
Because of the Cary Lecture on Thursday,
October twenty-third, the next meeting of the Cele- THANKSGIVING
brations Committee will be on Oct 30, 1958 Mr
Bandes ( Jewish Community Center) , Father Casey
( Catholic) , Mr Taylor ( Protestant) , and Mr Wads-
worth (Lexington. Council of Churches ) will be in-
vited to that meeting to formulate final plans for
the Thanksgiving Service
Mrs. Litchfield reported that the Park De-
partment will plant the tree at Adams School on
Friday morning at the U N ceremony
Mr Gustin reported that the Historic Dis-
tricts Commission will have a hearing to approve
the U N Tree-marking plaque on October twenty-
fourth at 7 30 p.m
Mr Cole restated that the Young People ' s
groups of the churches should be notified of the
Community Thanksgiving Service, immediately Mr
Cole will ask Dr. Hunt to be the speaker on that
occasion Mr Maloney will be asked to read the
Governor' s Proclamation Mr Wadsworth. will be
asked to get ushers
Mrs Litchfield wrote to Mrs Biggs of the
Theatre Guild Mrs Biggs and another member of
that guild will come to a Celebrations Committee
meeting Ncverber sixth was suggested as a suit-
able time to invite them
Mrs. Pullen reported that the Adams School
U N Day program is planned A photographer will
be there ; Mr Poehler will speak; members of the
Committee are invited to attend and the Chairman of
the Board of Selectmen will be invited
Mr Cole had suggestions of possible bands
for April nineteenth, and felt that ',re should begin APRIL 19th
plans for that celebration right away. Mr. Cole
had seen a Newport elementary school fife group and BANDS

thought that they were good He mentioned as other
possibilities, a Shriners band, the Salvation Army
band and the Marshfield band
Mrs Pullen made a motion and it was voted
that a sub-committee on bands be appointed in the
near future to contact bands well in advance and
the sub-committee would be empowered to employ
secretarial help, if needed
Mrs Pullen moved that Lincoln Cole, Jr be
appointed Marshal of the April nineteenth. afternoon
parade It was voted Murray P Dearborn was voted
Marshal of the morning parade
It was voted that Mr Gustin appoint Joseph
Rooney to be in charge of bands
Mr Gustin refreshed the corranittee of the
policy on bands With a $2400 limit on expenditures
for music, and with bandts expenses averaging $150
each, we may plan to have about sixteen bands in the
parade At the second November meeting, we will re-
view the budget and specifically develop plans
Mr Gustin has spoken to Sue Steele of the
High School Student Council She reported that there
will be a high school assembly at which the United
Nations Essay Contest winners will be announced
