TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
October 2, 1958
The third meeting of the 1958-59 Town
Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen' s
Room of the Town Office Building at 8 00 p m ,
October 2, 1958 Present were Messrs Gustin,
Rooney; Mesdames Pullen, Litchfield and Williams
Mr Gustin read a letter from Margaret (Mrs
J M ) Biggs, Chairman of the Theater Guild of Lex- THEATRE
ington Arts and Crafts Society, expressing the hope GUILD
that the Theater Guild might be given the opportu-
nity to present a comedy on April. 18th or early the
evening of April 19th The "First American Comedy"
was mentioned as a possible performance The Com-
mittee was interested in the idea and members of the
Theater Guild will be invited to the next meeting of
the Celebrations Committee to discuss the possibility
of sucha performance
Mr Gustin read a letter from a Brookline High.
School student asking that their band be asked to
participate in the 1959 April 19th. parade
Mrs Williams reported that Miss Morrison,
Principal of Adams School, has chosen a maple tree to TREE
be planted at the United Nations tree-planting cere- PLANTING
mony at Adams School on Friday, October twenty-fourth,
at 11 00 Mrs Williams will inquire of Miss Morrison
whether or not she would like to have a Selectman,
member of the School Committee, or a member of the
Celebrations Committee to speak
Mrs Pullen reported that three people have

Contest At present, there are no plans for an CONTEST
assembly program at the highschool on U N Day Mr
Gustin will bring this to the attention of a member of
the Student Council Mrs Pullen will ask the League
of Women Voters to speak to the Student Council, also
Miss McIntyre, teacher of Social Sciences of the
High School, has invited Miss Sureshst Renjen, graduate
student at Harvard, to speak at the high school on Mon-
day, October sixth The Committee will provide trans-
portation
Mrs Pullen will ask Miss McIntyre to select a

convenient date for the trip to the United Nations
Mrs Pullen. will ask Mr Peirce of the Lexington Travel

Bureau for an estimate of expenses for a trip to New
UNITED York by air for two days and one night Mr Rooney
NATIONS and Mr Dearborn will inquire whether or not the Rotary
and Lions Clubs plan to underwrite the expenses for the
trip to New York for the essay winners
Mr Nelson of the Cary Memorial Library reported
to Mrs Williams that the League of Women Voters will
set up a display of U N books and material inside the
entrance to the library
Mrs Ralph. Tucker of the Cary Lecture Committee
has received publicity material about the Cary Lecture
United Nations speaker She will send the material on to
Mrs Pullen
The Committee awaits the Historic Districts
Commission' s approval of the plaque which will mark the
tree which was planted on Lexington Green on U N Day
in 1908 If approval is granted, Mr Gustin, Mr
Maloney and Mr Greeley will participate in a simple
tree-marking ceremony at 12 15 p.m , on Sunday, October
26th All Lexington citizens will be invited through
the Lexington Minute-man newspaper, and all Lexington
ministers will be notified
The use of Committee funds for purchasing rope
for controlling crowds from Bedford Street to Woburn
Street was discussed
