TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
September 25,1958
The second meeting of the 1958-59 Town
Celebrations Committee was held in the Selectmen ' s
Room of the Town Office Building on September 25,
1958 Present were Messrs Gustin, Cole, Hutchins,
Dearborn, Mesdames Pullen and Williams
United Nations Day plans were discussed Mr.
Dearborn will inquire whether or not the Lexington UNITED
Rotary Club will underwrite the expenses of the trip NATIONS
to New York for the winning High. School essay con-
testants and their chaperone Mr Joe Gibson,
chaperone for the United Nations trip last year,
would know how muchmoney is needed to cover the ex-
penses this year Mr Gustin has invited Miss Mc-
Intyre, teacher of Social Sciences of the High School,
to be the chaperone The Committee voted to back an
expenditure of about fifty dollars for United Nations
visual aid material which. Miss McIntyre plans to
order Mr Dearborn will inform Miss McIntyre that
the Committee so voted Mrs Pullen reported that
Mrs Arsovo has written to three people asking them
to judge the essays for the contest and is awaiting
their replies
Mrs. Williams will contact Miss Morrison of
Adams School to find out ( 1) which kind of tree TREE
Adams School would like to have planted for the PLANTING
United Nations Day ceremonies there; ( 2) where the
tree should be planted; what kind of exercises will
be held in connection with. the tree planting The
Celebrations Committee will order the tree and have
the town plant it
Mr Nason of the library will be contacted
by Mrs Williams to find out whether or not there
will be a shelf of United Nations material inthe
library this year If there is, Mrs . Pullen will
call attention to it in an article in the news-
paper
At the tree planting ceremony on Lexington
Green ten years ago, Mr Greeley participated Mrs
Pullen suggested that Mr Greeley be asked to say a
few words at the ceremony when a marker is placed
before the tree this year on the Sunday before
United Nations Day
�._ Mr Gustin will speak to Mr Warren and to

Mr Norlin about bringing to the attention of the
Junior. and Senior high school students the trees
which were planted at those schools in observance of
United Nations Day
Thanksgiving plans were outlined by Mr Cole
he suggested having a program very similar to the
program last year The clergy should be asked to
participate , and different youth groups of the various
churches should be urged to come with their parents or
as a group Mr Harold Hunt, a Lexington resident,
was suggested as a possible speaker and Miss Elenoir
Hood as the organist Mr Cole will speak to Mr
Pushier about using the high school auditorium for the
program and having the high school Glee Club sing,
thus eliminating the need for securing robes for a
choir Mr Cole suggested that we emphasize that this
is a family service
Mrs Pullen reported that the Lexington Room of
the Cary Library will be dedicated no earlier than
January, 1959 Mrs Pullen also suggested that in a
newspaper article, Lexington residents should be urged
to invite foreign students out to Lexington for dinner
or for a weekend to further the cause of United
Nations Day
