- 1 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
September 16, 1958
The first meeting of the 1958-59 Town Celebra-
tions Committee was held in the Conference Room of
Cary Memorial Hall at 8 00 p.m on September 16, 1958
Present were Messrs Gustin, Dearborn, Hutchins;
Mesdames Pullen and Williams
Also present were Sonia (Mrs M W ) Arsove, 33
Barberry Road, representing the League of Women Voters
in connection with the United Nations Day Essay Contest
Mr Gustin announced that the first Cary Lecture
will be on Thursday, October twenty-third Mr Christo- UNITED
pher Phillips U S Representative of Economic and NATIONS
Social Council will be the speaker This lecture will
be presented by the Cary Lecture Committee jointly with
the Town Celebrations Committee as an observance of
United Nations Day Mrs Ralph Tucker of the Cary Lec-
ture Committee will be in charge of liaison with. the
Town Celebrations Committee
'r Paul Poehler has found it necessary to re-
sign from the T C C because of his being appointed as RESIGNA-
Acting School Superintendent Mr Gustin asked for TION
suggestions for a replacement for Mr. Poehler on the
Committee with someone who is, also, connected with. the POEHLER
schools
The Committee welcomed Mr Murray Dearborn who
was recently appointed by the Board of Selectmen to
the Town Celebrations Committee Mr Gustin immediately
asked Mr Dearborn to replace Mr Poehler as Chairman
of the United Nations Day observance
Mrs Sonia Arsove of the L W V gave a report of
the L W V activities to date, in connection with the U N DAY
setting up of the United Nations Day Essay Contest ESSAY
whichis open to Lexington High. School seniors who have CONTEST
a grade of "C" or better Miss McIntyre has announced
the contest to the students The L W V chose the sub-
ject for the essay, and will select three judges Two
winners, a boy and a girl, will be announced on United
Nations Day, October 24th Mr Dearborn will find out
about details of financing a trip to the United Nations
for the winners and their chaperone He will report
to Mrs Arsove Mr Gustin will arrange the travel de-
tails
The T C C felt that the winning essays should be
published Mrs Arsove will inquire whether or not

there is a policy against the publishing of the essays
Mrs Pullen will work with. the L W V. Publicity Chairman r
in connection with the publicity for the contest
The T C C has established a policy of planting a
TREE tree as an official act on United Nations Day This year
the tree planting ceremony will be at Adams School, and
a marker will be placed at the base of the tree .
Mrs Pullen will find out the date of the dedica-
tion of the Lexington Room of Cary Memorial Library
The Committee members present felt that Thursday
nights are the most convenient for meetings
The meeting was adjourned until the next meeting,
Thursday, Sept 25, 1958
