r- TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
May 8, 1958
The 31st meeting of the Town Celebrations Com-
mittee was held in the Conference Room of Cary Mem-
orial Hall on May 8, 1958 Present were Messrs
Gustin, Rooney, Poehler, Cole, Lewis, Hutchins, and
Mesdames Litchfield, Pullen and Williams
All bills which have been received by the
Committee thus far were reviewed It was moved and BILLS
seconded that all the bills discussed be paid Mr
Lewis moved that the power to approve all bills be
left to the Chairman It was voted Mr Lewis then
read two letters One letter was from the Selectmen
reappointing Mr Lewis to a three-year term Mr Lewis
then read a letter of declination from himself to the
Board of Selectmen The Committee accepted his
letter with regret Mr. Poehler moved that the word
"regret" be changed to "understanding" It was voted
Mr Gustin expressed his feeling that future
vacancies on the Committee should be filled by people
who will represent various important organizations of
the town so that there will be a better liaison between
the organizations and the Celebrations Committee
Mrs . Litchfield has sent thank-you notes to
Police Chief Rycroft; Mrs Muse, the caterer; Mr THANK-YOU
Seabury, Manager of the Lexington Inn Other thank- NOTES
you notes will be sent to Boy Scouts, C Y 0 , Min-
ute Men, Lions, American Legion, Kiwanis, Lexington
4-H, DeMolay, Rainbow Girls, Girl Scouts, Student
Council, Pran-Manaders, Spirit of '76, Mr. Gayer of
the Park Dept , Mr Bates of United Farmers, Board of
Selectmen, Mr Donald Gillespie for—the aenior high
School Band, Mr George White for the Junior High
School Band, V F W , Execu-phone System, Inc , Min-
ute Man newspaper, all float entrants, Mr George
Rowe and Mr Bob Jackson of Rowe-Jackson Chevrolet
for cars, Mr William Dunn of Dunn Ford Co , 709
Mass . Ave for six cars, Mr Bud Viano of Colonial
Garage for one car, A J Rochette, and to the Federal
services
Mr Hutchins suggested that at the beginning
of 1959 that we send a request to the Army and Navy
asking that they participate on April 19th.
Mr Lewis mentioned that the Explorer Sea
Scouts of Everett and Charlestown participated in the

early morning parade
Mr Lewis suggested that in the future when. we
ask for automobiles from dealers that we request that
the drivers be appropriately dressed for the occasion
Mr Gustin read a letter from Needham High
School mentioning that they missed the collation at
the High School Mr Gustin suggested that the High
School P T A be asked to help with. providing re-
freshments for the bands in the future
The League of Women Voters had sent a question-
naire which was given to Mrs Williams to be filled
out The L W V is attempting to set up a calendar of
events for the town
A letter from Mr Forte was read He hopes to
see the Marines participate in the April 19th parade
in the future A letter will be sent to Mr Forte by
Mrs Litchfield to the effect that a request for
Marines to participate this year was sent on Feb 10,
1958, through. the Commandant of the First Naval Dis-
trict.
A thank-you note from Mr Jack Frost was read
Mr Rust and Mr Waters of the Yankee Homecoming group
also sent notes
A letter from Mr William R Page was read It
concerned the scheduling of the visit of a U N secre-
tariat delegate to Lexington for United Nations Day
After discussion, it was tabled until the new Celebra-
tions Committee is formed In this connection Mr
Poehler suggested that the Chairman appoint sub-committees
to work on Thanksgiving and United Nations Day and to
report back tothe Committee as a whole with. suggestions
Mr Cole moved that the Committee give to Mr
Lewis a vote of thanks for his cooperation and service
to the Committee through all the years
Mr Rooney will be custodian of the Celebrations
Committee felt arm bands until they are used again
The following suggestions for improvements of
SUGGESTIONS April 19th. celebrations in the future were brought
FOR FUTURE forth ( 1) that ropes be used to rope off the crowd from
the Green down to Woburn St ( 2) that there be some
identification of visiting dignitaries in the cars
( 3) that all floats be in position by 11 00 a m ( 11.)
that the reviewing stand must be "formalized" by

deciding exactly who should be there and how many ( 5)
all information concerning parade roster, format, etc
must be given to all police as a regular standing pro-
cedure ( 6) information must also be available at
Town Hall. ( 7 ) a picture contest might be promoted
through the Chamber of Commerce , and that might result
in a better pictorial record of the events of the day.
Mr Poehler announced that on May 21st at Adams
School from 7 :30 - 9 00 there will be Open House, P T A
meeting, and an exhibit dealing with. the U N. The
Principal, Miss Ruth Morrison, invites the Celebrations
Committee to come to see the exhibit There may be
ideas whichcan be used in connection with United
Nations Day
Mrs . Pullen brought up the question of the use of
the large photographic portrait of Lady Lexington Mr
Gustin said he would go before the Board of Selectmen to
find out what might be done with it
Mr. Gustinasked that the Committee meet in two
weeks for the purpose of organizing a new committee
