HomeMy WebLinkAbout1958-03-20-TCC-min.pdf 141 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE March 20, 1958 The 26th meeting of the Town Celebrations Com- mittee was held at 7 00 p.m , March 20, 1958 in the Selectmen' s Room of the Town Office Building Present were Messrs Gustin, Lewis, Poehler, Cole, and Mes- dames Pullen and Williams A note from Mrs Litchfield was read reporting that she had sent letters to Senators Saltonstall and INVITATIONS Kennedy. Congressman McCormack had sent regrets be- cause of a previous speaking engagement in Washington Letters had been sent to Ministers and Selectmen in- viting them to march in the morning parade, and a letter had been sent to Mrs. Cheever inviting her to be our guest It was announced that the U S. Coast Guard will have three vehicles in the parade The Lexington FLOATS Grange, the League of Women Voters, Melrose High, School and the Explorer Scouts of Troop 60 will have floats Mr Poehler agreed to see Mr Gillespie to be sure that both Junior and Senior High School bands SCHOOLS plan to be in both morning and afternoon parades He will check to find out whether all schools will fly flags on April 19th, and will apply to have Adams School open that day from 6 :30 a.m to 7:30 a.m. , and 1 30 to 2 00 p.m. , and Munroe School open from 7 00 to 7 30 a.m In the publicity sent out April 7th, there should be an_irvi *ntien—in—the paper to the elemerrtary—PUBLICiter school children who are not in organizations but who would like to march, to meet at the Junior High School playground where someone from the American Legion will be in charge of them - Invitations should be sent to the Selectmen, the sex New England Governors, the Commander of the INVITATIONS First Naval District, the Commander of the Boston Army Base, E.J Roland, Rear Admiral of the Coast Guard, the Commanding General of Fort Devens, the Commandant of the Watertown Arsenal, and the Commanding General of Hanscom Air Force Base Luncheon for fifty people will be planned to include the Selectmen, the Town Cele- brations Committee, Senators, Congressmen and honored guests and wives or husbands of those above, "Lady Lex- ington" and her court and their escorts and representa- li 142 tives of. "Yankee Homecoming. " These people plus the Parade Marshals and their aides will be invited to attend the afternoon reception After some discussion, Mr Poehler recommended that $250 00 would be a reason- able sum to set aside to cover expenses of boththe luncheon and the reception Mr. Gustin reviewed activities in connection CERTIFICATE with the "Certificate of Birth. " After clearing with. OF BIRTH the Selectmen, and talking to Town Counsel. Stevens who felt that there was no necessity for copyrighting the certificate because it was so peculiar to the town of Lexington, Mr Gustin met with the Student Council . They were receptive to the idea that the certificate will be turned over to them for distribution after April 19th, on the basis that donations may be sent to their Foreign. Student Exchange Fund The Celebrations Committee then discussed whether or not to register the names of all persons who receive a certificate After much discussion, Mr Cole moved withregret that we dispense with page and line numbers on the certificates and not record the names This motion was carried The distribution of Birth Certificates to citi- zens of Lexington was discussed Mr Gustin suggested 1 that we start by reporting on the Certificate at Town Meeting under Article 2, March 24, 1956, and present each Town Meeting member present with. a Certificate We will order 25,000 certificates for townspeople and "Town Celebrations Committee" will be printed on the bottom of the certificates Distribution through the schools seems the most satisfactory method for getting certificates to the largest number of people of the town. Mr Poehler agreed to talk to Supt of Schools Smith to ask him for permission for distributing cerfi- ficates to school children on Thursday, April tenth A letter will be sent to the newspaper, also, asking that organizations request the number of copies which they would like for their members . Copies of the Certifi- cate will be sent to Mrs. Cannam to be sent to Boston newspapers After April eighteenth, the Certificates will be obtainable by making a donation to the Foreign Student Exchange Fund of the Student Council of Lexing- ton High School Since only six bands have definitely accepted invitations, Mr Lewis will send invitations to nearby High School bands, and he will extend an invitation to the Royal Lancers Band to participate on the same basis as other bands I , Georgyiketililiams
