HomeMy WebLinkAbout1957-10-24-TCC-min.pdf TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE October 24, 1957 The eleventh meeting of the Town Celebrations Committee was held at 8 15 p.m. October 24, 1957 in the Conference Room, Cary Memorial Hall Present Messrs Gustin, Poehler, Cole, Lewis, Rooney; Mes- dames Cheever, Litchfield and Pullen. Also Rev. Hogan of St Brigid's Church, Rev Taylor of the Unitarian Church and Mrs Bandes of the Jewish Community Center. Mr Poehler gave an outline of the Junior and JUNIOR Senior High School Assemblies that day Due to rain, HIGH the Junior High assembly was held in-doors Mr Gustin, ASSEMBLY Mr Poehler, Mrs. Pullen and Mrs Litchfield attended and were very impressed with the fine and inspiring program conducted by the students Mrs Pullen's daughter took part in the program Committee members then went to the Senior High SENIOR School for another fine assembly Mr. Gustin HIGH announced the winners of the essay contest, Carol ASSEMBLY Flynn. and John Overton Carol ' s subject was the Effectiveness of this U N. , and John's, Disarmament ESSAY Arthur Currier, who had been an exchange student, WINNERS spoke of his experiences in Norway, followed by Beat Schurch of Switzerland, a senior in High School, who told of life in his country Mr Poehler told the committee the judges were very impressed with all the essays, and that it was difficult to select the winners The Thanksgiving service was then discussed Mr P"ehl$r-rep•ertsd the a,C 1t.i-iuw was avaiiaole, THANKS- subject to their approval of organist As the organ GIVING is new, they request that care be taken to select a competent organist Mr. Cole had contacted Mr Lockwood, President of the Lexington Choral Society who was agreeable to the society' s participation providing they could have a practice session at 7 p.m and that the committee would approach the churches to borrow vestments, also that there should be ample room for 100 singers Motion was made and seconded that committee make such request. Motion carried I � Program was planned by clergy and committee, as follows 112 Prelude PROGRAM Invocation Father Hogan Hymn "We Gather Together" Governor' s Proclamation Chairman, Board of Selectmen Anthem Lex Choral Soc - their selection Scripture) Taylor Rev Taylor Prayer Anthem Mr Gustin introducing speaker Hymn Come Ye Thankful Benediction Rabbi Stanpfer It was felt that one member of the clergy of each of the three faiths, catholic, protestant and jewish, should take part in the service Two of the regular ushers from each church will be asked to serve as ushers Mr Cole was authorized to purchase carnations for these men Committee members took the names of all churches to aslc that they put notice of the Thanksgiving service in their bulletins, and to appoint two ushers It was voted to commend our chairman of public information, Mrs Pullen, for the excellent job she is doing The committee expressed their appreciation to Mr Poehler, chairman of U N Day, for his fine work in coordinating and planning the two school assemblies Notes of thanks will be sent Mr Warren, Miss McIntyre, and Mr Gibson of the Senior High School, and Mr Norlin and Mr Malloy of the Junior High School for their interest and cooperation Next meeting will be November 7, 1957 Eleanor B.
