Mr Gustin read report of the Town Celebrations Committee which was presented by Mr Gustin at the town APRIL 19th meeting April 1, 1957 Copy is attached and is a part of these records A new stand will be available for this April 19th, as the one used last year cannot be found Mr Gustin said the new stand will be 3 ft wide and 6 ft tong The committee will buy the lumber, and the Pub- lic Works Department will provide the labor The stand will be the property of the Town Celebrations Committee Mr Gustin has already talked to Mr Richard Gayer, and the secretary was instructed to write Mr Gayer confirming this arrangement Mrs Cheever was asked to contact Street Stuart of WBZ in regard to cancelling parade in case of rain Mr Poehler will make arrangements with Adams and Munroe schools to have them open in the morning Police Department will be contacted regarding advisability of having a cruiser at the end of the parade It was felt this would eliminate non-partici- pants from joining, as has happened in other years Mr Gustin told the committee that he had re- ceived a call from Capt Dow, in charge of Sery Bat 301, F A Bat , 94th Div relative to their participa- tion in the parade They had been invited to come to the meetings of the committee, held Feb 20 and March 7, open to all groups wishing to participate No one from that organization came, and no word was received from them afterwards Capt Dow was unable to attend but told Mr Gustin he was sending Lt Silva to represent him Lt Silva was told the roster of the parade had already been made up, and there was a question on the part of the committee where to put this unit Lt Silva re- ported they would probably have 15 men, and were anxious to march. 84 After much discussion, Mr Poehler made a motion, seconded, to allow them to march, taking their proper place in the parade directly after staff and veterans In case of inclement weather, Mrs Cheever, Mr Gustin and Mr Rooney will make the decision as to marching Eleanor Litchfield Secretary 85 REPORT OF TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE The Town Celebrations Committee, now a By-law committee of the Town of Lexington, is responsible for the observance of the 19th of April and United Nations Day The Committee believes the form of any obser- vance should properly reflect the wishes of the citizens and taxpayers of the town. In 1957 April 19 coincides with Good Friday and as a result an abbreviated obser- vance was indicated and is planned A minimum budget APPROPRIATIDN was submitted on this basis for the current year The committee would like to point out, however, that a budget for a normal and regular observance is estimated at approximately $(},000.00. To properly develop plans for the 19th of April celebration it is necessary to start making arrangements months before the actual date and in many cases actual committments should be concluded Under the arrangement of town meeting late in March, and sometimes extending into April, the com- mittee has no appropriation and therefore is restrained j from properly developing a completed plan The committee would like to have the town meeting recognize the problem and, by accepting this report, give a vote of assurance so that proper plans may be developed for 1958
