HomeMy WebLinkAbout1956-09-18-TCC-min.pdf 53 TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE September 18,1956 The second meeting was held on Tuesday, Sep- tember 18, at 8 30 p.m in the Conference Room The six present were Gustin, Cheever, Hutchins, Poehler, Lewis, and Rooney Visitors were Mrs Pfaff from the Lexington League of Women Voters, Rev Taylor, and August Schumacher and Norma Julin from the High School Mrs Pfaff explained that with the approval of our committee the International Relations Com- mittee of the League would like to have a booth on the Green The new U N Cook Book would be on sale as well as free literature on the U N for adults and the women would be dressed in costumes of dif- ferent countries The Celebrations Committee thought this a novel idea and approved of the idea After quite a long discussion with the young people it was agreed that Gus Schumacher would go HIGH back to the Student Council and see whether the High SCHOOL School would like to plant a U N tree near the new building, what movies they would like to see about the U N , and if in another year they would be inter- ested in an essay contest about something to do with the U N , the winners of which would be sent to New York to visit the U N Rev Taylor told us that some years ago on U N Sunday people from all the local churches met REV on the Green for a short U N service This seemed TAYLOR to be something that our committee would like to can revived. Then Mr Gustin told us that the U S Com- mittee is suggesting in 1956 that towns have groups BOOKS which present collections of books to local libraries There are four U N bookshelves A, B, C, D ( for children; $10, $25, $50, and $10 each respectively ) Mr Gustin will talk up the idea to the different local service groups and see if we can present the $50 one to our main library and two $10 children's to bothpublic libraries Other suggestions were to have speakers at an evening meeting and to have neighborhood coffee U hours on U N Day Mrs Cheever was asked to write 54 to both the Student Council and the President of the P T A to urge mothers to hold neighborhood coffee hours : "Let Good Neighborliness Begin. Here " Next meeting to be October 1 Edith B Cheever P S. Mr Gustin wanted to have a member of the Chamber of Commerce sit in on our meetings for assistance . L.
