TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
September 18,1956
The second meeting was held on Tuesday, Sep-
tember 18, at 8 30 p.m in the Conference Room The
six present were Gustin, Cheever, Hutchins, Poehler,
Lewis, and Rooney Visitors were Mrs Pfaff from
the Lexington League of Women Voters, Rev Taylor,
and August Schumacher and Norma Julin from the High
School
Mrs Pfaff explained that with the approval
of our committee the International Relations Com-
mittee of the League would like to have a booth on
the Green The new U N Cook Book would be on sale
as well as free literature on the U N for adults
and the women would be dressed in costumes of dif-
ferent countries The Celebrations Committee thought
this a novel idea and approved of the idea
After quite a long discussion with the young
people it was agreed that Gus Schumacher would go HIGH
back to the Student Council and see whether the High SCHOOL
School would like to plant a U N tree near the new
building, what movies they would like to see about
the U N , and if in another year they would be inter-
ested in an essay contest about something to do with
the U N , the winners of which would be sent to New
York to visit the U N
Rev Taylor told us that some years ago on
U N Sunday people from all the local churches met REV
on the Green for a short U N service This seemed TAYLOR
to be something that our committee would like to can
revived.
Then Mr Gustin told us that the U S Com-
mittee is suggesting in 1956 that towns have groups BOOKS
which present collections of books to local libraries
There are four U N bookshelves A, B, C, D ( for
children; $10, $25, $50, and $10 each respectively )
Mr Gustin will talk up the idea to the different
local service groups and see if we can present the
$50 one to our main library and two $10 children's
to bothpublic libraries
Other suggestions were to have speakers at
an evening meeting and to have neighborhood coffee
U hours on U N Day Mrs Cheever was asked to write
54
to both the Student Council and the President of the
P T A to urge mothers to hold neighborhood coffee
hours : "Let Good Neighborliness Begin. Here "
