TOWN CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
January 24, 1956
The tenth regular meeting of the Town Cele-
brations Committee was held on January 24 from 8
to 9 30 p.m in the American Legion Room of Cary
Hall . Three new members were welcomed to the com-
mittee to take places of three resignations Mrs
Eleanor Litchfield, 57 Dexter Road; Mrs Florence NEW
Bernier, 296 Bedford Street; and Mrs Rowena Robin- MEMBERS
son, 80 Hancock Street Eight additional members
were present Lewis, Cheever, Bashian, Foster,
Gillespie, Sawyer, Williams, and Hutchins
Mr Lewis opened the meeting with the
acceptance of the minutes of the January 10 meeting
as printed with the correction that Mr. Gillespie
was present It was reported by the chairman that
Mr. Gustin had sent invitations to 85 local organi-
zations asking for representation at our Open Meet-
ing to be held in Estabrook Hall on the evening of
January 31 Mr Lewis expressed the hope that Mr
Gustin would be well enough to talk to the group on
that evening and invite their cooperation to cele-
brate April 19
Mr Rooney would be asked to take charge of
the floats in Division Four of the parade He FLOATS
would be expected to speak briefly to the group in
explanation of how the theme could be carried out
on floats and set a date for submitting participa-
tion
Mr Poehler will be asked to announce the

Here" as suggested by the school children, school
personnel, and our committee members
Mr Lewis will be in charge of the Open
Meeting and will tell the representatives present OPEN
of the committee 's desire to see the return of the MEETING
children' s color guard in the hope that some or-
ganization will be interested in sponsoring such a
color guard either this or next year
Mr Gillespie reported that many schools are
having vacations during the week of April 19 and BANDS
will not be able to enter the parade Gloucester
has accepted, but Saugus wants $100 to participate
The feeling of the members present was to send ex-

planation to Gloucester in anticipation of their
presence and to lay the matter about Saugus on the
table for a later discussion
Mr Dearborn will be asked to take charge of
inviting out-of-town bands on the college or adult
level Mr Gustin will be urged to put publicity
concerning our plans for April 19 ,celebrations in the
Boston newspapers
As a result of a discussion about the crowds
of people on the common during the speaking onthe
common after the parade, it was decided that Mr
Lewis would ask the cooperation of the police in
regulating such crowding
Copies of the budget were distributed to mem-
bers not having them Announcement was made of a
meeting with the Appropriation Committee on Monday
evening, January 30 Those representing the Cele-
brations Committee are Lewis, Gustin, Foster, and
Cheever
The meeting adjourned at 9 30 p.m
