LEXINGTON CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE
Minutes of the Fifth Meeting, October 18, 1955
The fifth meeting of the Town Celebrations Com-
mittee was held in a conference room in Cary Hall on
the evening of October 18 Mr Lewis called the meet-
ing to order at 8 10 p.m Nine members were present
Mesdames Cheever and Williams, Messrs Lewis, Dear-
born, Rooney, Gustin, Foster, Frothingham, and Belcher
The minutes of the last meeting were read and
approved Mr Lewis read a letter from Mr Reed giv-
ing us answers to the questions we asked him on the
evening of October 5 concerning problems as to the
operation of our committee.
1) The duties and scope of the Committee as DUTIES
well as the authority fall under the direction and
authority of the Board of Selectmen
2) The Board will pay for expenses connected EXPENSES
with UN Day and writing materials Budget should be
started at once and will be due by December 15, 1955
The Board unanimously agrees with our suggestion of
budget approved one year in advance and urges us to
submit two this year ( 1956 and 1957) .
3) Flags will be displayed on the Common on FLAGS
Monday, October 24
4) The Board is unanimously in favor of hav- TREE
ing a tree planted on UN Day in memory of Julius
Seltzer Mr Maloney would like to donate the tree

of the Shade Tree Department about the kind of tree
and where it is to be planted
Mr Rooney volunteered to pick up the budget
forms and a copy of last year' s budget at the Town
Office for the next meeting Mr Lewis said he
would answer the Selectmen' s letter acknowledging
their approval and help in planting a tree on UN Day
and informing them that such a celebration would be
impossible this year because the Town Celebrations
Committee has not been appointed until the last of
August and wasn' t able to meet with the Selectmen

L Mrs Cheever reported that cards had been

sent to those absent the fourth meeting She said F
she had inquired of Miss Murray about committee
stationery and envelopes They would have to be
printed by Adams. Mr Adams said that we could get
500 sheets for $8 50 and 500 envelopes of two sizes
for $8 .00 The art department at the high school
gave us eight posters Two were displayed at the
libraries. Mr Dearborn sent a list of merchants
who were willing to have UN posters Mr. Rooney
delivered the posters to six of the stores.
Mr Lewis was asked to inquire from the
Board of Selectmen why no publicity had been given
to the townpaper about the formation and organization
of our committee.
The remainder of the evening was spent on
April 19 and looking over past celebrations Mr
Frothingham had brought several copies of last year' s
schedule. Matters on the agenda for the evening were
return of the children' s color guard; military units
in the parade; no speaker for the afternoon; a float
division and its arrangement; and the need for a theme
around which to build all parts of the celebrations.
Mr Lewis suggested "We, the People . "
The meeting adjourned at 9:30. The next
meeting would be Tuesday, November 1, in the Select-
men's room. All were asked to think up a good theme
and report at the next meeting, November 1 . Cards
should be sent to those not present.
